The Clearview Clippers and Westlake Demons both came into week two looking to rebound after tough week one losses. It was a messy game that had 8 combined turnovers, including 6 by the Clippers. Those giveaways proved costly, as the Demons ran away with this one 35-14.
To say the game got off to a sloppy start is an understatement. Nathan Christensen intercepted Demons quarterback Moe Abdelhady on the second play of the game. Christensen returned the interception all the way to the 4-yard line, setting the Clippers up to take an early lead. However, a fumbled handoff on their second offensive snap gave the ball right back to the Demons.
A third turnover came when Clippers quarterback Braden Turner was picked off by Ali Assad. Assad would have had a pick-six if not for a block-in-the-back call that wiped out the return. The interception led to a 7-yard touchdown catch by Geno Woods to put the Demons up 7-0. Westlake extended their lead to 14-0 when Moe Abdelhady connected with William Bierfeldt for a 44-yard score.
It looked like the Clippers got the break they needed when Stephen Trowbridge of the Demons muffed a punt. On the very next play, Tommy DeFranco intercepted Turner and returned it for a Westlake touchdown. It was the third turnover for Clearview and 5th between the two teams in the first half. Westlake took a 21-0 lead into halftime.
The turnover woes continued for the Clippers in the second half. Braden Turner was again picked off by DeFranco on the first drive of the 3rd quarter. Abdelhady then added his third passing touchdown of the night on a 3-yard shovel pass to Stephen Trowbridge. Westlake’s lead grew to 28-0.
Clearview finally put a good drive together late in the 3rd quarter, but it ended with a fumble. The Clippers were able to rebound with their first touchdown of the night on the following possession. Running back Kameron Williams scored from 6-yards out to make the score 28-7.
The Demons defense wasn’t done taking the ball away. Ali Assad got his second interception of the night and took it all the away to the end zone. That was 6th turnover forced by the Demons on the night. Tristin Ientile scored a late 1-yard rushing touchdown for the Clippers, making it a 35-14 game. Ientile finished the night with 127 yards on the ground and 32 in the air.
