After an exciting win against the Bills last week, the Cleveland Browns will need to turn things around fast as they prepare for a Thursday night showdown against divisional rival the Pittsburgh Steelers. Thursday night games are, well, usually sloppy games as both teams have very little time to prepare for them on a short week.
All-in-all, this is another chance for the Browns to go 1-0 and keep the momentum on their side. We saw a complete team win against the Bills last week, with the team committing fewer penalties and the offense making strides with an improved Baker Mayfield.
Thursday night won’t get much easier as the Steelers head into week 11 on a four-game winning streak and second place in the AFC North. With that being said, here are three keys to victory for week 11 against the Steelers.
- Keep getting creative utilizing Kareem Hunt
Kareem Hunt made his season debut with the Browns last week and played a key factor in the team’s 19-16 win over the Bills. In fact, Hunt played in 58 percent of the team’s snaps, producing 74 total yards from scrimmage.
Not only did he contribute as a runner and pass-catcher last week, but Hunt was also often asked to block for Nick Chubb, who helped turn 11 carries into 113 yards rushing with Hunt on the field with him.
Maybe the Bills weren’t expecting to see that much of Hunt in the game plan. Or maybe the 24-year-old running back just adds another element to the Cleveland offense that needs to continue to be worked with moving forward as well.
The Steelers come into Cleveland with a very average run defense and if Freddie Kitchens can continue to spread Hunt around within the offensive game plan, that’ll certainly be a difference-maker Thursday night.
2. Must score touchdowns in the red zone
Another week down, another embarrassing turnout in the red zone. The first half of last week’s game was hard to watch at times, especially when the Browns got inside the red zone, which seems to be an unanswered problem lingering into the second half of the season.
That included running 11 plays inside the Bills 10-yard line and coming away with just 10 points total. Most of the attempts at the goal-line were stopped short for little or no gain, causing concerns with the goal-line playcalling.

To make matters worse, the Steelers enter week 11 giving up a touchdown on just 50 percent of their opponents’ possessions inside the red zone, ranking ninth-best in the league. Here’s what Kitchens had to say about the team’s lack of scoring inside the red zone on Monday afternoon.
“We have to do a better job of maintaining our blocks,” he explained to reporters. “We were on the right people for the most part. We just have to win our one-on-one matchups a lot of times down there. When you get down in goal-to-go situations, you would like to be able to run the ball in. To do that, you have to win your one-on-one matchups.”
You must be able to take advantage of the limited opportunities inside the red zone and if that’s something that gets cleaned up with time, the Browns will have a good shot of going 1-0 on any given week.
3. Avoid Minkah Fitzpatrick, Baker Mayfield must build off solid performance last week
Baker Mayfield became the first quarterback this season to throw for multiple touchdown passes in a game against the Bills. That says a lot because that was also his first game all season throwing multiple touchdown passes in a game while also going back-to-back games without a turnover as well.
This week, Mayfield will try to avoid one of the most productive safeties in the game this week in Minkah Fitzpatrick. Since being traded to Pittsburgh, Fitzpatrick has recorded 34 tackles, five interceptions, one forced fumble, two defensive touchdowns and one fumble recovery in just seven games donning the black and yellow.
Furthermore, opposing quarterbacks are just 3-of-15 with 0 touchdowns and three interceptions on throws 20 or more yards downfield versus the Steelers since adding Fitzpatrick.
It’s not going to be easy playing against the Steeler defense on a short week, so Baker Mayfield must continue to build off of last week’s performance and play a mistake-free game in a critical divisional game in Cleveland.
