UFC on ESPN: Lewis vs. Teixeira or UFC on ESPN 70 took place tonight from Nashville in front of a packed house. Here are some quick takes from the show in case you missed it.
The Main Event
Derrick Lewis KO’d Tallison Teixeira in just 35 seconds. There was fence holding, Derrick Lewis took off his shorts in the post fight celebration and many who saw it, claim the stoppage came way to quick and their was massive fence holding. All that in less then a minute. In the end, the 8-0 record of Teixeira with 8 first round stoppages proved to be nothing more then hype. With the win, Lewis picks up his 20th career win in the cage and now sets his sights on current UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall.
The Main Event Days of Calvin Kattar are done
Calvin Kattar has main evented 5 UFC on ESPN cards over his career, but after taking his 5th straight loss tonight, his days as a main eventer are clearly over and with this latest loss to Steve Garcia, his days in the UFC appear to be numbered as well. Kattar last one a fight in January of 2022.
Stephen Thompson may need to retire.
There was a time when may considered Thompson one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. I can assure you, that conversation will never be had again as he is now looking retirement right in the face. With his decision loss to Gabriel Bonfim tonight, he dropped to 17-9-1 overall, and now is a loser of 3 straight, 5 of his last 6 and 8 of his last 12.
The card had a 67% finish rate
8 of the 12 fights had a decisive finish with 4 on the main card and 4 on the undercard all ending in either KO or submission. Out of those 8, only 2 saw the third round. It was an “under the radar” card but looking at the total package of what we saw tonight, it was sneaky good!
It was the best fight card of the day.
With AEW All In going an insanely long 7 hours, the WWE Saturdays Main Event flopping and NXT’s Great American Bash feeling like a glorified house show, the UFC card was by far the best one of Saturday.
