COLUMBUS, OH – Congratulations to the Olentangy Liberty Patriots for overcoming a 4-0 early deficit to capture a thrilling OHSAA Division I State Championship victory over Upper Arlington.  The Patriots knocked off the Golden Bears in a thrilling double overtime 9-8 clash.  It was what State Championship games should be!  The winning goal came off the stick of Corina Hilmas at the 1:27 mark of double overtime to send the Patriots to a state title!

The Patriots were powered by a hat trick from Madeline Pohmer while receiving two goals each from Megan Benton and Corrina Hilmas.  Capping off the scoring for the Patriots was Molly Brooks and Aubrey Bartosik with one each.  Goaltender Howenstine finished 7 of 15 in saves during the grueling 52 plus minute battle in the blazing sun of Historic Crew Stadium.

The Golden Bears saw two goals each from Berkeley Thomas, Bethany Smith and Abigail Stelzer while Elle King and Evie Ruma each found the back of the net once.  Wiles was the one dialing out the dimes as she finished with a whopping 5 assists. In goal was Mauer who saved 7 of 16 shots against her.

The first half was a crazy tale of two exact opposite momentum swings.  The Golden Bears prowled out to a super quick 4-0 lead just 10 minutes into the action with goals by Stelzer, Smith and Thomas.  The Patriots received a goal from Pohmer in the closing seconds of the first to get back in it at 4-1.

The furious comeback gained fuel in the first 65 seconds of the second quarter with Patriot goals by Pohmer, Bartosik and Brooks.  Shockingly after 8 combined goals in a little over 14 minutes, there were no goal the rest of the first half as we went to the break tied at 4.

The second half began the same way the game did, with quick goals by the Golden Bears to once again build a lead.  The Goden Bears outscored the Patriots 3-1 in the third to build a 7-5 lead heading into what could have been the final quarter.

The Golden Bears maintained a two goal at 8-6 with only 3:19 left in the match until the Madeline Pohmer magic was once again dialed up!  In thrilling fashion and the stuff Disney movies are mad of, Pohmer shocked everyone in attendance with two goals in the final 3:19, including one with 9 seconds left to send the game into overtime, and leave the Golden Bears stunned.
