Padua Defeats Holy Name in 9-6 On Morgan’s Message Special Night

PARMA, OH – The Padua Franciscan Bruins took the road to take on the Holy Name Green Wave. This is a big rivalry between these two schools; however, the Bruins were able to walk away with the last laugh, ultimately winning the contest 9-6.

 

Senior Ava Schmidt started things off strong, giving the Bruins an early 1-0 lead. Padua was dominating the ball to start the contest; however, Holy Name was holding its own and playing great defense. Senior Alexiah Bryan was able to come right back and score a goal of her own, making the score 2-0 late into the first quarter.

 

It was all Padua to start the game, and they showed no signs of slowing down. Senior Anna Kwiatkowski had a great pass to senior Emma Takacs, who was able to score a goal. This gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead with just 4:10 remaining in the first quarter. It was all Bruins as they were having their way to end the quarter.

 

Freshman Claire Wisniewski came out looking to score for her team right away; however, her shot just missed, and the drought for the Green Wave continued. Schmidt for the Bruins was able to come right back and score their second goal of the game. This made the score 4-0.

 

Senior Alexis Gonzalez was able to finally end the drought for Holy Name with a goal of her own. This made the score 4-1 at the 8:35 mark. Wisniewski was able to come right back and score a goal to make the score 4-2. The Green Wave was building momentum and was looking to start coming back.

 

Holy Name decided to call a timeout right after their goal in hopes of working on their defense and keeping their offense attacking. The timeout seemed to have worked as junior Katherine Vuong came right out of the timeout to score her first goal of the game. This made the score 4-3 at the 3:43 mark.

 

However, freshman Isabella Geffert was able to respond to the back-to-back Green Wave goals to score her first in the game. This made the score 5-3, Bruins. The quarter was very back and forth to end, and both sides started to become very aggressive and increased the pace of play significantly.

 

The third quarter started off extremely slowly. However, Wisniewski was able to score her second goal of the game. This made the score 5-4 at the 9:45 mark. Senior Cheyenne Cansler was able to tie the game at 5 apiece with a goal of her own. Holy Name was playing super well and had all of the momentum.

 

The Bruins started to become disciplined and were playing super good defense late into the quarter. Geffert was able to score her second goal of the game to put the Bruins on top 6-5 at the 4:24 mark. However, the game was very back and forth the rest of the way, which ended the quarter.

 

Bryan was able to score her second goal of the game to start the fourth quarter. This made the score 7-5 and the Bruins were in complete control offensively. However, despite the dominance the Bruins were displaying on offense, the Green Wave were playing very good defense.

 

Wisniewski was able to score her third goal of the game to make the score 7-6 at the 7:38 mark. Wisniewski was trying to rally her team to a huge comeback win over their rival. However, Schmidt was able to respond with her second goal to extend the Bruins’ lead to 2.

 

It was all Bruins late as senior Ava Bonfill was able to score her first goal of the game. This put Padua up by 3, making the score 9-6 at the 4:26 mark. Padua was pulling away late, and the Green Wave seemed to have had no answer as the Bruins were able to play great defense to ultimately end the contest.

 

The player of the game for the Padua-Franciscan Bruins was Alexiah Bryan with 2 goals, and the player of the game for the Holy Name Green Wave was Claire Wisniewski with 3 goals.
