The St. Joseph Academy Jaguars took the road to take on the Avon Eagles in a girls’ lacrosse matchup. This contest was super high scoring and was back and forth all game. However, the Eagles were able to come out on top, winning 13-11.
Junior Amy Willard of the Jaguars scored a goal just two minutes in to give her team the lead, 1-0. The Eagles played great defense to start the first quarter despite allowing an early goal. However, Willard was able to come right back for the Jaguars and score her second goal of the game to put her team up 2-0.
Senior Sevilla Anderson was finally able to get the Eagles on the scoreboard with a goal of her own. Senior Ayla Perez followed up with a goal for the Eagles to tie the game at 2 apiece. Avon really started to heat up late into the first quarter.
Sophomore Ella Schaffer was able to score another goal for the Eagles to make the score 3-2. It was all Avon, and the Eagles were able to force the Jaguars to call a timeout. Ella Schaffer came right back out after the timeout and was able to score her second goal of the game. This made the score 4-2 as the quarter expired.
Willard started things off strong for the Jaguars, just like she did to start the first quarter, by scoring another goal. This gave Willard her second goal of the game and made the lead 4-3 early in the quarter. However, Ella Schaffer showed no signs of slowing down after an amazing end to the first quarter, seeing her score her third goal of the game. This made the score 5-3 at the ten-minute mark.
The Eagles’ offense was clicking on all cylinders in the second quarter as senior Ally Urban scored, and Ayla Perez scored her second of the game. This made the score 6-3 and the Eagles were in the driver’s seat. Avon’s defense was still playing very well, however, senior Ireland Kovacevic for the Jaguars was able to get her shot to go in after it bounced off her teammate. This ended the Jaguars’ drought and made the score 7-4 going into the half.
The second half started off with Kovacevic scoring her second goal of the game to make the score 7-5 just 37 seconds into the quarter. However, senior Addison Atkins was able to respond for Avon, scoring a goal of her own to bring the score to 8-5. The quarter started to become very back and forth scoring wise.
Both sides were exchanging goals left and right, this time seeing sophomore Amelia Hobbs score for the Jaguars, and Perez scoring her third goal of the game for Avon. This brought the score to 9-6. Both teams started to become very aggressive on offense.
Willard’s aggressiveness on offense allowed her to score her fourth goal of the game to make the score 9-7 at the 5:20 mark. Sophomore Jesslyn Kostecke was able to score her first goal of the contest for the Eagles to make the score 9-8. However, Willard came right back to respond with her fifth goal of the game. This made the score 9-9 with just two minutes remaining, and the Jaguars were on a huge run, ultimately forcing the Eagles to call a timeout.
The momentum was still heavily favoring the Jaguars late, as sophomore Jezebel Kostecke was able to get on the scoreboard. This made the score 10-9 with the Jaguars on top with just a minute left to play in the quarter. The third quarter would end, and St. Joseph was in complete control heading to the last quarter of the game.
The Jaguars started the fourth quarter dominating the ball. However, the Eagles were playing great defense, flustering St. Joseph. The Jaguars’ defense was hanging in there as well, forcing Avon to have a sloppy offensive quarter to start.
The quarter started to become very slow late, until freshman Mia Della Vella was able to score her first goal in the contest for the Eagles. This ended Avon’s drought and also tied the game at 10 apiece with just 5:39 remaining. This sparked something within the Eagles’ offense as junior Madison Dunn was able to score to give the Eagles the lead, 11-10.
The Eagles were starting to find some late-game momentum in hopes of securing the win. However, Hobbs was able to score her second goal of the game for the Jaguars to tie the game once more at 11 apiece at the 3:30 mark.
However, Ella Schaffer responded yet again with her fourth goal of the game for Avon. This gave the Eagles the lead at 12-11. The Eagles were on fire late as Urban was able to score her second goal of the game for Avon. This made the score 13-11 with just a minute to play.
St. Joseph was forced to call a timeout after the Eagles’ run. The Jaguars were hoping to make a miraculous comeback with just a minute to play, however, the Jaguars would not get the ball back as the Eagles played keep away to run out the quarter.
The player of the game for the Avon Eagles was Ella Schaffer with 4 goals, and the player of the game for the St. Joseph Academy Jaguars was Amy Willard with 5 goals.
