Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio – The Walsh Jesuit Warriors defeated the visiting Shaker Heights Red Raiders, 18-3, in Thursday night action at Conway Stadium.
Walsh Jesuit got the scoring going early and often. Senior Jackie Holtzer scored at the 9:43 mark to put the Warriors ahead, 1-0. Grace Cooney followed with a goal 40 seconds later to increase the margin to 2-0. Cooney found Merritt McLaughlin for a goal at the 7:21 mark, increasing the lead to 3-0.
The Warriors also got another goal from Jackie Holtzer, and a pair of goals from freshman Gianna Debietto to increase the lead to 7-0 after the first quarter.
Walsh Jesuit would increase their margin to 9-0 thanks to goals from Merritt McLaughlin and Riley Eastman. Shaker Heights got on the board with 1:18 left in the second quarter with a goal from senior Charlotte Juan. The Warriors quickly countered with Grace Cooney’s second goal with 49 seconds left, making the score 10-1 at the half.
Gianna Debietto scored her third goal of the game at the 10:34 mark of the third quarter, increasing the lead to 11-1, and triggering the running clock. Senior Julia Nowak added a goal, and Shaker countered with a goal from sophomore Sloane Fenton.
Walsh Jesuit got three more goals from Debietto, Camden Miller and Jackie Holtzer to make the score 15-2 after three. They would score three more times (Julia Nowak, Bella Zarlinga, Gabby Mineo), and Shaker would score once more (Sloane Fenton) for the final margin.
In total, senior Jackie Holtzer scored four goals for the Warriors. Sophomore Grace Cooney and freshman Gianna Debietto each scored three, and junior Julia Nowak and senior Merritt McLaughlin each had a pair.
Walsh Jesuit moves to 2-2 and travels to Saint Ursula Academy on Saturday, April 5th.
Shaker Heights hosts Strongsville on Tuesday, April 8th.
