In a huge GCC game, the Mentor Cardinals traveled to take on the Medina Bees.  It was a very energetic and physical game; however, the Bees came out on top winning the contest 45-36.

Medina started things off by winning the tip. Star senior guard for the Bees, Olivia Klanac, started things off strong with a smooth mid-range jump shot. Medina was able to make a nice defensive stand and then junior forward Abby Dress came down to knock down a triple to put the Bees up 5-0 quickly.

Medina’s physical defense early led to a very slow start for the Cardinals. However, things started to get going for Mentor once senior forward Hailey Watson got into the scoring column with a nice layup. The game from there was all Medina, forcing a ton of missed shots and ultimately going into the second quarter up 11-4.

Klanac got the second quarter started by attempting a three pointer in which she was fouled, however, Klanac stepped up and knocked down all three free throws. It was all Medina from the start of the second, finding their stride to go on a nice 6-0 run. Junior guard Nina Rodriguez was able to finish a tough layup to end the Cardinals scoring drought. The Cardinals put up a fight to end the half but facing a ten-point deficit to the Bees.

Senior guard Sophia Stouffer started the Mentor Cardinals second half off strong with a 3-pointer to get her in the scoring column. Mentor came out playing super physical to start the second half forcing the Bees to call a timeout in the first 53 seconds. Right after the timeout, Rodriguez came right back down the court to knock down a 3-pointer, raising her total to 5 points in the contest. A nice defensive stand by the Cardinals led to yet another bucket, this time being Watson. Mentor was able to start the third quarter on a nice 8-0 run as the Bees have been snake bit by poor third quarters as of late.

Klanac, however, was able to stop Medina’s drought with a layup. The third quarter was very electric seeing both teams going back and forth trading buckets. Klanac was doing it all in this moment for the Bees connecting with yet another 3-pointer. This made the score 31-23 Medina at the 2:37 mark. Mentor and Medina ultimately ended the quarter trading buckets, however, still seeing the Bees up.

The fourth quarter started a bit slow compared to the third quarter. Medina was playing clock management, and the score was 37-34 at the 5:39 mark. Both teams continued to play very slowly, finding Medina to score 6 and Mentor to score 4 for the next 3:53. Sophomore forward Molly Gilbert went on to make two huge free throws to end the game.
