The Magnificat Blue Streaks defeated St. Joe’s 61-32 in one of the area’s favorite rivalry games. This completes a regular season sweep between the two and 7th straight in the rivalry.  The game was a route from the second half on, but it didn’t come without fourth quarter drama as about 6 minutes into it, Julia Hall scored her 1,000th career point as a Blue Streak.

I spoke to Hall post-game about the career milestone and how special it was to come against their rival, “It feels great.  I didn’t want it to overpressure me, I honestly just wanted to get the win over our rival, it wasn’t about me. We treat each game importantly, no matter who we play. “

One of the reasons the Blue Streaks took over in the second quarter was the incredible play of Reese Roggenburk who had 10 of her 14 in that quarter. Sofia Wilson also looked incredible tonight with her usual intense defense and incredible court vision.  Wilson finished with 11 points and a dizzy number of assists and steals.  Gemma Wichmann was her usual powerful self as well with 6 points and a host of boards and blocks.  Sofia Laporte played lockdown defense while finishing with 2 points.

Rounding out the scoring for the Blue Streaks tonight was Charlotte Pap with 6 points on two three pointers while Maddie Kowalski and Elise LaPorte each finished with 2.

As for the Jaguars, they came out firing before cooling down dramatically in the middle quarters.  The Jaguars were led by Ruthie Becker with 8 while Bree White finished with 7.  Also scoring for the Jaguars was Brooke Haddad and Melanie Alvarenga with 5 each while Kate Mocho had 3.  Rounding out the scoring for the Jaguars was Gabriella Croce and Sophie Stehlik with 2 each.

The Blue Streaks used their vaunted full court press to grab an 8-0 lead, just minutes into the action.  The Jaguars finally began to beat it when Bree White nailed a layup to stop the bleeding.  From there, Ruthie Becker hit a three, and we had a game at 8-5.  The Blue Streaks finished the quarter on a 9-3 run however and took a 17-8 lead after one.

The second quarter was dominated by the Blue Streaks defense as they held the Jaguars scoreless for the first 7 plus minutes of the 8-minute quarter.  When Ruthie Becker hit a three for the Jaguars, a 14-0 run until that point by the Blue Streaks, had already built their lead to 31-11 at that point.  A Wilson three at the buzzer for the Blue Streaks handed them a 36-13 halftime lead.

Two key notes for the fourth quarter would be that Julia Halls 1000th point came as she scored the first 8 Blue Streak points.  Also, in that fourth quarter the Blue Streaks had five seniors start the quarter in a pretty cool symbolic moment.  Finally, the Jaguars Brook Haddad cut through the middle like a hot knife through butter several times to put all five of her points in the fourth.

Congrats again to Julia Hall for the 1,000th point.

Congrats to Sofia Wilson who recently earned her 300th assist.

Congrats to Bree White for making me feel old tonight.  I remember back in 2016 and 2017 when I used to cover her brothers Cameron and Omar.  One of the coolest parts of this, “job” is seeing several siblings come though a system or two.

All in all, thanks everyone for reading and enjoy the photo’s below!
