The Cleveland Browns Benching of Jameis Winston Sends Clear Signal of What Comes Next

The Hardest Truth The Cleveland Browns Must Face

After Jameis Winston threw for 2,038 yards and 12 touchdowns along with 12 interceptions and 2 fumbles in his 7 starts, the Cleveland Browns have seen enough of the former number one overall pick of Tampa Bay. He will now play behind Dorian Thompson-Robinson on the depth chart as the Browns travel to Cincinnati this weekend. Winston was far from the answer, but he gave the Browns a chance to win, Thompson-Robinson does not.  Only a few days after announcing the Browns will stay with Watson as their starter for the near future once healthy, they have pretty much  made it clear Winston will not be his backup.  At this point, the move symbolizes the tanking of this season, along with the jettison of anyone who may give Watson a challenge in the coming year.

Did I think Winston is a qualified starter in the NFL?  No, not really, but he can keep you in the hunt and with a qualified running game around him, give you a decent chance to win.  While I never thought Winston was the answer, or a long term solution, he was the only part of this offense left that gave the Browns a chance to win 1 of every 3 games or so, and make it interesting at times.

Thompson- Robinson is not a qualified starter in the NFL, and perhaps not even a qualified backup for that matter. He is the perfect pre-season guy to get other guys ready, and that is about it.  As a pro, DTR has gone 1-2 as a starter and thrown for only 540 yards on 75 of 146 passing with 1 touchdown and 7 interceptions.

Really, the only good thing is that he has already started, so no one has to update that long list of QB’s since 1999, or have his asinine football jersey with all the former starting quarterbacks names on them updated.

I’ll say it one more time, Baker Mayfield leads them to the playoffs and they trade him away.  Joe Flacco leads them to the playoffs and they don’t make a single effort to re-sign him.  When is enough enough already? Watson is not the guy and never will be.  They should tank the rest of this season like they clearly are, draft a QB and start all over, one more time….
