Avon Eagles Win Silver Rail Rivalry 42-10 Over Avon Lake Shoremen

Avon Lake, Ohio – The Avon Lake Shoremen hosted the Avon Eagles at Avon Lake Memorial Stadium to close the 2024 regular season with the Silver Rail Rivalry at stake. The Eagles went on to secure a 42-10 Week 10 win over the Shoremen on the road to keep a perfect season alive at 10-0 on the season, staying red-hot going into the playoffs.

Avon Lake started off the game with the ball on their own 34-yard line. The Shoremen had a promising drive to start off the game, but it was halted short after a fumble, which set the Avon Eagles up on the Shoremen 33-yard line. The undefeated Avon offense did not take long to put points on the board, after quarterback Nolan Good connected to receiver Grant Barr for a 16-yard reception to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 8:39 remaining in the first quarter.

Avon Lake started their next drive on the 50-yard line. The Shoremen kept the momentum going after an electric kick return, marching into Eagle territory before being stopped short for a 37-yard field goal, making it a 7-3 Avon lead with 4:28 remaining in the first quarter. Avon began their next drive on their own 20-yard line after a touchback was enforced.

Nolan Good constructed yet another swift drive with the explosive Eagles offense, resulting in a 1-yard rushing touchdown by running back Quiante’ Smith to give Avon a 14-3 lead with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter just coming off of three offensive plays. Avon Lake started their next drive on their own 20-yard line. Trying to steal some momentum away from Avon, the Shoremen marched down the field into Eagle territory, but were ultimately stopped short by the fierce Avon defense, resulting in a Shoremen punt. Avon went to work from their own 24-yard line, and held onto the ball heading into the second quarter. 

The Eagles offense continued to move down the field into Avon Lake territory, and Nolan Good made a beautiful connection to receiver Matt Maxey for 30-yards to give Avon a 21-3 lead with 10:39 remaining in the second quarter. Avon Lake, feeling the pressure, attempted to have a drive result in their favor but were yet again stopped and forced to punt and give the ball back to the unstoppable Eagles offense. Avon began their next drive on their own 47-yard line. After two plays on their drive, the Eagles fumbled the ball on a reception, which set the Shoremen up on their own 46-yard line.

Avon Lake, feeling a momentum shift, kept the ball on the ground until they reached their own redzone. Quarterback Alex Affolter connected with wide receiver Aiden Stewart for 25-yards to cut the Eagle lead to a 21-10 score with 4:32 remaining in the first half. Avon, wanting to add to their lead, marched down the field after starting on their own 35-yard line. The Eagles’ offense was too much for the Shoremen, resulting in a Nolan Good quarterback keeper for a 7-yard rushing touchdown to give Avon a 28-10 lead with 3:04 remaining in the second quarter.

Avon Lake, feeling the pressure, had a great start to their next drive but was yet again forced to punt the ball back to the dominant Eagles offense. Avon began their next drive on their own 43-yard line. Good continued to move the ball gracefully through the air and connected with wide receiver Cole Kepner for a 35-yard touchdown to give Avon a 35-10 lead with 0:27 remaining in the first half. Avon Lake received the kick and took a knee to go into the locker room down 25 at halftime.  

After a dominating first half, the Avon Eagles received the ball to begin the second half. Nolan Good and the Eagles offense picked up right where they left off, starting on their own 25-yard line. Avon moved the ball down the field, and scored yet another touchdown on an explosive Nolan Good strike to wide receiver Jakob Weatherspoon for a 76-yard touchdown, giving the Eagles a 42-10 lead with 10:30 remaining in the third quarter.

Avon Lake started their first drive of the second half on their own 48-yard line after a great return. The Shoremen offense was successful in being able to get into Eagle territory. Although the drive had started off great, the Avon defense held strong and forced a turnover on downs on their 32-yard line, setting the Eagles up for their next drive. Avon held onto the ball for the remainder of the third quarter. 

Going into the fourth quarter, the Eagles had continued to run clock off with being up by 30+, while moving down the field. Avon was set to kick a 38-yard field goal but the kick sailed wide left. Avon Lake began shop on their own 20-yard line. The Shoremen offense tried their hardest to move down the field, but the Eagles defense had all the momentum, resulting in yet another Avon Lake punt.

Avon began their final drive on their own 15-yard line and decided to run the rest of the clock out, taking a knee to secure a 42-10 win on the road and claim the Silver Rail Rivalry on the 2024 season. Avon goes into the playoffs in hopes of securing the #1 seed for their division and remains an unbeaten 10-0 after a long, hard-fought season. The Avon Shoremen finished the season at 6-4, and had a great season, still securing a playoff spot.
