Avon Defeats Amherst 42-7

Avon – With the end of OHSAA football regular season barreling down, the Avon Eagles (9-0) played hosts to Southwestern conference foes The Amherst Comets (6-3) in week 9 of OHSAA football action. The Avon Eagles defeated the Amherst Comets by a score of 42-7.

The Comets received the opening kickoff and proceeded to take almost 8 minutes off the clock, making that Eagle defense work. The methodical drive eventually came to a close as the Comets failed to convert on a fourth down. The Eagle offense finally got the ball and ran away with it. They methodically drove down the field in just 3 minutes scoring a touchdown on an 8-yard quarterback keeper to #5 Nolan Good. Then the Comet offense took over and started driving.

The drive would be stalled after the Eagles were able to get 2 sacks forcing a punt. After taking over the Eagle offense decided to waste no time, and #5 Good threw the ball to wide out #8 Matt Maxey for a 78-yard catch and run touchdown. The Comets then turned the ball over back to the Eagles after another failed fourth down. The Eagle offense decided to take a more methodical approach and drive down the field. The Eagles would cap off the drive with a 1-yard Quarterback keeper to #5 Good.

The Comets would take over deep in Eagle territory after a big kick return and penalty but would not be able to get anything done turning over on downs yet again. The Eagles would start out this drive with some backyard football shenanigans, #5 Good would pass it back to the wide-out #8 Maxey who would then pass it for a 68-yard touchdown to #12 Grant Barr. The Comets would not be able to get anything done offensively and the last play of the half included the Eagles defense getting another sack.

In the second half both teams flexed their defensive muscles. After each defense forced punts Avon sent out their backup quarterback who proceeded to throw an interception to the Comet defense who brought it back for a touchdown, untouched. Then more back and forth defensive stops which included a Comet defensive sack, Eagles defensive sack, and an Eagle interception.

The Eagle offense would finally get some momentum and take their time driving down the field which was capped off by a 4-yard touchdown on the ground by running back Quiante’ Smith.

Player of the game for the Eagles is #8 Matt Maxey. Maxey caught 6 passes for 141 receiving yards, and one was a 78-yard catch and run touchdown. Maxey was also 1 for 1 as a quarterback completing a 68-yard passing touchdown.

Cole Kepner of the Eagles also had a big night with 5 catches for 139 yards and a massive 75 yard touchdown to put the game away for good in the second half.
