The Hawken Hawks Take Down the Lutheran West Longhorns 27-21

The Hawken Hawks win in a close battle to the Lutheran West Longhorns on a chilly, foggy night 27-21. The Longhorns made a late comeback from 21-6 at the end of the third to get it to a one score game. The Hawks fended off the Longhorns in the fourth to win by a touchdown.

Hawken was led by quarterback Donovan Moorhead, running back Kene Obi, and wide receiver Charlie Mallett. Moorhead threw for 14 completions, 184 yards, and three touchdowns. Running back Kene Obi had himself a day with 23 carries. He finished with 143 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Moorhead’s primary receiver was Mallett with 12 attempts and 7 receptions. He hauled in 128 yards and two touchdowns. Tommy Wright, Mitch Greenberg, and Jordan Johnson all were key receivers as well. On the other side of the ball Kene Obi again was the key player. He had a total of 10 tackles, 8 of them being solo. Miles Hamilton, Charlie Mallett, and Brendan Healy also had multiple tackles for the Hawks.

For the Longhorns, Cortlon Campbell was the key factor in this game. He had 64 yards rushing including a touchdown and 44 yards receiving. However, his biggest impact was a 90 yard kick return in the clutch fourth quarter. Quarterback Jace Palmer had a good game with 10 completions for 108 yards. De’Von McDougle and Michael Verhun brought in 30 and 25 yards respectively. J’Leon Isom ran the ball for 13 times for 66 yards and a touchdown. Isom continues to be the Longhorns main guy on the offensive side. For the Longhorns, it was the defensive side of the ball that was key in this game. They had 52 total tackles compared to Hawken’s 38. Denver Scott, Mykel Robinson Jr., and Cortlon Campbell all led the team with 7 tackles each. Sam Justice, Maurice “Mo” Wynn, De’Von McDougle, and Carlos Hall all put in several tackles for the Longhorns.

Next week the Hawks take on Orange on the road, while the Longhorns take on West Geauga on the road as well.
