Game Preview: Miami University vs. Notre Dame

Miami University RedHawks vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a MAC underdog vs one of college football’s most prestigious schools, is set to be an intriguing Week 4 matchup. Miami is coming off a slow start at 0-2 while Notre Dame looks to improve to 3-1. Although both teams will want to establish themselves as the season goes on, Notre Dame has something to prove after their last meeting with a MAC opponent.

Notre Dame

High expectations surround Notre Dame as they head into Week 4 with a 2-1 record. Coach Marcus Freeman’s Fighting Irish are focused on bouncing back after a shocking Week 2 upset, in which they lost to Northern Illinois University 16-14. Quarterback Riley Leonard has struggled to lead the offense, throwing for just 433 yards and no touchdowns so far this season. With inconsistent quarterback play, the Irish have leaned heavily on running back Jerimiyah Love, who has rushed for 279 yards and 3 touchdowns through 3 games. Facing another MAC opponent, Notre Dame is expected to find its rhythm in the passing game and regain offensive balance.

Notre Dame remains strong on defense, with a physical defensive line and quick defensive secondary. The defensive backs have proven their ability to shut down opposing passing games, while the defensive line has consistently applied pressure with a total of 5 sacks on the season. Against the smaller offensive line of the Miami RedHawks, the Irish defense will aim to dominate the trenches and disrupt the RedHawks’ game plan.

Miami University

Under head coach Chuck Martin, the Miami RedHawks are no strangers to being the underdog. Despite a slow start to the season, Miami has established itself as a contender in the Mid-American Conference due to the team’s performance last season. Quarterback Brett Gabbert will need to play nearly flawless to give his team a chance. To stay competitive, Gabbert must minimize the mistakes seen in the first two games. Miami’s offense will primarily rely on deception and quick routes to move the ball against Notre Dame’s strong defensive unit.

Miami’s defense must devise a strategy to counter Notre Dame’s well-balanced attack. To keep the game close, the RedHawks’ front seven should emulate Northern Illinois University’s defensive approach by maintaining aggression and applying consistent pressure on quarterback Riley Leonard. This tactic could force mistakes or negative plays, disrupting Notre Dame’s offensive rhythm.

Overview

Maintaining a competitive edge early will be crucial for Miami. An upset could be possible if they stay within striking distance and avoid giving up big plays. For Notre Dame, the key is executing and avoiding mistakes. If the Fighting Irish perform to their full potential, as demonstrated in last week’s 66-7 victory over Purdue, they should have little trouble defeating the RedHawks.
