by After falling behind 10-0 late in the second quarter, Green (1-1) scored 17 unanswered to take down Riverside (1-1) 17-10 Friday night. Junior quarterback Tyson Hunka did it all for the Bulldogs, racking up 226 yards and a touchdown through the air while adding 64 yards on the ground. With just under five minutes to go, Hunka hooked up with Anthony McMichael III for an 84-yard touchdown that proved to be the difference.
Beavers Strike First
Riverside received the opening kickoff but did not hold onto the ball long as a backward pass on their second play was ruled a fumble, setting up the Bulldogs near midfield. Green would drive all the way to the Beavers 14-yard line but an incompletion on fourth down halted things. Near the end of the first, Green went down to the three-yard line but on the first play of the second quarter, Donovan Conwell picked off a pass in the end zone to stop the threat.
Starting the drive from their seven-yard line, Riverside orchestrated a 17-play drive and got on the board with a 32-yard field goal from Diego Remigo to make it 3-0 Beavers. On the first play of their next drive, Kyndall McCaleb busted loose for a 67-yard touchdown run, but the play was called back on a holding penalty. Just two plays later, McCaleb once again found a seam and rumbled for a 68-yard touchdown, stretching the Riverside lead to 10-0.
As time ticked down in the first half, Hunka led Green on a big drive of their own, going 7-10 for 55 yards and the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a 26-yard field goal from Logan Noirot as time expired, drawing Green closer at 10-3.
Big Play Bulldogs
The Beavers forced a punt on the second half’s opening drive and began their drive on their own 20-yard line. Facing a third and six, Bo Brandehoff rolled out of the pocket and was intercepted by Evan Reed who rumbled 40 yards for the Bulldog touchdown, tying things up at 10-10.
Following a Beavers punt, Green took over at their 29-yard line. Despite crossing into Riverside territory, the Bulldogs were forced to punt. Backed up on their own nine-yard line, the Beavers used a heavy combination of Brandehoff and McCaleb to work their way down to the Green 13. On fourth down, Brandehoff found David Seibert in the end zone but he bobbled the ball and it was ruled incomplete, forcing a turnover on downs.
After both squads exchanged punts, Green started their next drive on their 16-yard line. On the very first play, Hunka found McMichael wide-open in the middle of the field, and the junior sprinted for an 84-yard touchdown, giving the Bulldogs their first lead at 17-10 with under five minutes to go.
Riverside would be forced to punt but the defense came up clutch, forcing a three-and-out to give the offense one last shot. Just minutes after his lead-taking touchdown catch, Anthony McMichael came up big again with an interception, allowing the Bulldogs to run precious time off the clock.
With five seconds remaining, the Beavers would get another chance, but Brandehoff was forced out of bounds near midfield and the Bulldogs held on for a 17-10 victory.
Keys to the Game
Junior quarterback Tyson Hunka had himself a ballgame, going 18-25 for 226 yards and a touchdown through the air, and added another 64 yards on the ground. Evan Reed also turned in a top-tier performance, rushing for 39 yards and returning an interception for a touchdown. Anthony McMichael also made his impact felt in the contest, including a big 84-yard touchdown reception and clutch interception late in the fourth quarter.
Though they fell behind 10-0 early, the Bulldogs defense dominated in the second half, allowing the Beavers across midfield on just one drive and allowed just one touchdown on a long run in the second quarter.
Next Week
Following a tough loss, Riverside will look to get back on track next Friday night when they travel to Erie, Pennsylvania to take on Cathedral Prep (2-0).
After breaking into the win column for the first time, Green will look to keep the good times rolling next Friday when they play host to Tallmadge (2-0). The Blue Devils are coming off a 49-0 win over Ellet in Week 2.
