Northern Illinois 2024 Football Preview

Northern Illinois

Coach: Thomas Hammock, year 5

Last year’s record: 7-6

Overview

NIU bounced back after a disappointing season proving they can compete to be on the top teams in the MAC once again. This year poses a new challenge with Rocky Lombardi gone and the QB position open for the first time in a few years. Ethan Hampton is the favorite to start week one. Hampton has started a few games in his career but could have a short leash if he struggles. This does open up the possibility  for Arkansas-Pine Bluff transfer Jalen Macon to get opportunities to play behind center. The running back situation is secured with Antario Brown after accumulating 1,296 yards and 10 touchdowns a season ago. The defense returns a lot, eight starters return to the Huskies with a few transfers to make this unit a strong one. There could be nine Seniors starting for the Huskies making it one of if not the most experienced defense in the MAC.

Dom’s Overlook

The past two seasons I haven’t been the biggest believer in the Huskies as I correctly predicted an off season two seasons again when they missed a bowl game. Last season many were calling for Hammock’s job before the season started. He secured his position with a seven win season and a strong roster that many have as their MAC championship hopefully and it’s hard to disagree with that. This year I am up on the Huskies due to the dynamic use of Brown out of the backfield and the strength of the defense.

Prediction

This season is the highest I have had NIU ranked with the lowest I have had Toledo. The MAC has NIU tied for third with BGSU and I believe that’s a respectable ranking for the Huskies. I have NIU as the second best team in the MAC and winning the MAC Championship with a strong run game and a suffocating defense. I expect NIU to take the MAC by storm as they have a non-conference schedule that can give them two wins. For the Conference schedule they have a chance to have the best conference record. I have NIU winning eight games with a low of seven and a high of eight.
