FORT MYERS, Fla. – The No. 1 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team took down in-state opponent Bluffton University by a score of 11-6 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Terry Park Sports Complex.
BW (4-2) jumped out to an early lead in the second inning but it was not long until Bluffton (0-1) took the lead in its first game of the 2024 season. The Beavers would go on to take a 6-3 lead in the sixth before the Yellow Jackets went on a 8-0 run to close the game.
Scoring Plays
- Top 2nd – sophomore centerfielder Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider (Grove City) scored on a wild pitch
- Top 6th – freshman catcher Mason Fixx (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) hit an RBI double to left
- Top 6th – junior second baseman Noah English (Perrysburg) singled to drive in his first RBI of the year
- Top 8th – junior designated hitter Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) drove in two after a Beavers’ error
- Top 8th – senior first baseman Max Anastasio (Chesterbrook, Pa./Conestoga) stayed hot with a two-run triple to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good
- Top 9th – junior rightfielder Joey Marousek (North Royalton) added to the BW lead with a triple to center driving in two
- Top 9th – Anastasio drove in two more runs with a single
At the Plate
- Sophomore leftfielder Trent Bucy (Eastlake/Eastlake North) went a career-best 3-for-5 with two doubles
- Anastasio led the way for the Brown and Gold with four RBI on four hits scoring one run
- English added another hit bringing his total to two on the day
- Marousek also tallied two hits and two RBI
On the Mound
- Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference right-hander Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) punched out a season-high six batters giving up only two runs on three hits through five innings of work
- Senior right-hander Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) got his first win of the season after throwing a scoreless and hitless seventh inning striking out one
- Freshman right-hander Jake Heatherington (Bellaire) struck out four in his two innings where he allowed no hits
