The Wadsworth Grizzlies took on the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Grizzlies in the second game of the Super Tuesday doubleheader at Elyria Catholic High School. Four quarters was not enough to decide this one. In what was a tightly contested game all night long, the Grizzlies would end up coming out on top 53-50 in overtime.
In what was a thrilling, back-and-forth game the Wadsworth Grizzlies came out on top 53-50. Lauren Decker, in just her second game back from injury, led all scorers with 22 points. Grizzlies head coach Andrew Booth said after the game that “We’ve got 5 seniors, they didn’t want this to be their last game. It wasn’t always pretty, but we really battled out there… It wasn’t a Picasso, but we scratched and clawed our way to victory.”
It was a hot start from Jessie Zenir of the Bees, as she scored 6 of their first 8 points. Both teams started off shooting the ball well. It was a close game at 10-9 midway through the first quarter. Ashley Perdion would then score 5 straight points for the Bees to make it 15-9. This kicked off a 9-0 run that put the Bees in front 19-9.
The Bees big run was immediately followed by a 11-0 Grizzlies run that gave them a one point lead. Perdion would end the Bees scoring drought and give them the lead right back. That would not stop the Grizzlies momentum though, as Lauren Decker put them right back in front. Wadsworth would hold a 26-23 lead going into halftime in what was a competitive first half. Decker led all scorers with 13 first half points.
The third quarter remained close early. Both teams were trading trips to the free throw line. The Grizzlies lead grew to 32-26, but Zenir converted an and-one to cut the lead back to 3 points. After an Ana Pinkerton layup Wadsworth’s lead was back up to 7 points. Every time it seemed like the Grizzlies were pulling away, the Bees would climb right back into it. Through three quarters Wadsworth held a 36-33 lead.
The Bees took a 37-36 lead after a Maya Woods fast-break layup. It was their first lead since the second quarter. The Grizzlies responded by going on a 8-0 run to go up 44-37. Lauren Decker scored 6 of the 8 points during the run.
Once again, the Bees would not go quietly. A three pointer from Lexi Ganley would make it a 44-42 game. Ashley Perdion would then tie the game at 44 with two free throws. The Grizzlies led 48-46 with time winding down, but Jessie Zenir made a game-tying layup to send the game overtime.
In overtime, Emily Nagel got the scoring started for the Grizzlies. Wadsworth struggled at the free throw line in overtime, only making three out of eight. That left the door open for a chance for the Bees to tie on their final possession. However, it was to no avail as their final attempt came up short.
