Holy Name Turns on the Heat to Take Down Buckeye 73-46

Parma Heights, OH- Holy Name stays undefeated in GLC play as they take down Buckeye 73-46 following big days from Drew Styers and Maxwell Bollin. 

Buckeye came to play in the first as they quickly jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Turner Dolata quickly scored from the free throw line and drilled two 3’s in the opening frame. Derek Snyderburn scored 2 field goals, Scott DiMarco scored 2 points, and Nolan Klingbeil split his free throws to round out the Bucks scoring in the first. Holy Name was led by Styers as he drove and converted the Green Wave’s first 6 points. Bollin added 2 points while Aaron Riley added 3 to cut the Buckeye advantage to 14-11 heading into the second.  

Holy Name was able to break down the Buck’s zone defense in the second frame. Bollin and Styers would combine for all 22 points the Green and White scored in this quarter. Buckeye was able to keep things close after falling behind, but the high-powered Holy Name offense was too much. With seconds left on the clock, the Green Wave led 33-23. Casey Murray went on to knock down a buzzer beating triple to cut the HN led to 33-26 at the break.  

Holy Name’s stifling defense came ready to play in the second half as they only allowed 7 points in the third quarter. Shots weren’t falling for the Bucks as Dolata struggled to connect as lady luck wasn’t on his side. Snyderburn along with Cody Burgess were the only Bucks to score in this quarter. Adam Humenik broke his silence as he drained two 3’s and a field goal, giving himself 8 points heading into the fourth. Bollin added 4 points while Styers added another 9. Heading into the final frame, Holy Name was in the driver seat up 54-33.  

Holy Name spread the ball around better in the fourth quarter as 6 players recorded points. The Green and White’s offensive domination continued as Styers capped off his career high 30-point performance. A lot of his points came from and one drives to the rim. Bollin was able to make a similar impact as he added a few and ones. All 19 points he scored on the night came in the first three frames. Humenik added his final 4 points, taking his tally to 12. Brody Boyert, Joe Lewis, and Rovin Sanchez all added their first points of the contest. Riley added another 3 to take his tally to 6. He now averages 5.5 points per game since returning from an injury. Logan Brown led Buckeye in scoring in the fourth with 5 points. He was closely followed by Dolata as he took his tally up to 13 points. Holy Name closed things out with ease to seal the 73-46 victory. 

Holy Name improves to 7-5 on the season and 3-0 since the calendar turned to January. They put this record to the test against the top team in Northeast Ohio as Garfield Heights makes the trip to Parma Heights Wednesday. Coach Patton of Holy Name spoke about his history playing against Garfield Heights’ Head Coach Sonny Johnson and he commented on his talent and the job he’s done with the Bulldogs. Buckeye looks to avoid double digit losses on the season as they take on Highland on January 16. The Hornets head into that game with a 7-5 record following a 5-point loss to Barberton.
