AEW Double or Nothing 2023: Hit, Hold or Fold!

AEW Double or Nothing was tonight from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and what a night it was!

Let’s get right to it with Hit, Hold or Fold

Hit =  An absolute banger of a match and story told.

Hold – A good match, but not really sure if it did anything to help anyone or advance a storyline.

Fold – A match that fell flat with a decision that left us scratching our heads.

The Hardy’s & Hook defeat Ethan Page and The Gunns

Hold – I don’t expect The Hardy’s and Hook to win and Trio’s Tag Titles or even compete for them anytime soon, but, it was nice to see them win a match on PPV.  Where they go from there, is back to the tag title division, and for Hook, FTW defenses.  So, for this win, we give them a hold.

Orange Cassidy wins The 21 Man Battle Royal to keep his International Championship

Hit – One of the greatest battle royales I have ever seen.  We are a long way away from kick, punch and grapple in a the corner for Battle Royales.  This was a spot fest for 23 straight minutes and extremely enjoyable.  The winning streak and title reign of Orange Cassidy keeps going and should continue through the rest of the summer.

Adam Cole defeats Chris Jericho

Fold – Wow, this was a dud and the fans let them hear about in the end with a chorus of boo’s.  Sabu has no business even being out there and it was a strange choice made stranger when he lasted all of 15 seconds before crashing through a table, and stumbling to the back.  A waste of a payoff.

FTR retains their AEW Tag Championships over Jay Lethal and Jeff Jarrett

Hold – A good match with the proper result.  The group of Jarrett and Lethal lost a member in Mark Briscoe tonight, but should still remain a faction for quite some time to come, and will continue to get over as heels.

As for FTR, I honestly don’t know but it would be nice to see them taking on some younger challengers or more established actual Tag Teams and not thrown togethers.

Wardlow retains his TNT Championship with a ladder match win over Christian Cage

Hit – Wardlow continues to impress when he gets the chance to shine on PPV.  Wardlow showed again tonight he can go toe to toe with anyone on the roster, young or old and still have a great match.  Cage, has been a tremendous asset to AEW since arriving, but his in ring time will be winding down soon.

Toni Storm defeats Jamie Hayter to secure the AEW Women’s Championship

Hit – Smart move!  It was clear that Hayter was legit hurt, and they needed to get the belt off her quickly.  This also puts The Social Outcasts further over as hated heels.  They were smart to have this be a squash match, with the chance of a rubber match already established if Hayter can heel up by All In.

AEW Trios Champions retain over The Acclaimed with Daddy Ass

Hold – Not sure why they would have thrown The Acclaimed in this one to begin with.  Even with that being said, the dominant run of The House of Black continues.  The House of Black continue to be one of the best factions in AEW and the Acclaimed have lost almost all of their steam over the past 90 days since losing to The Gunns a few months back.  Can they get it back?

TBS Champion Jade Cargill retains against Tara Valkyrie

Hit – Jade Cargill is not only extremely sexy but can also deliver in the ring and did again tonight.  She made Valkyrie look like a million dollars, and still came away with the win.  Cargill is the total package!

Kris Statlander shows up and defeats Jade Cargill out of nowhere for the TBS Belt.

Fold – Incredibly stupid, you book a lifetime, injury prone jobber to come back with zero buildup and beat one of the best attractions you have on the roster? Tony Khan listens to the fans and dork on message boards far to much.  This proves it, he is an idiot!

MJF retains the AEW World Championship over Sammy Guevara, Darby Allin and Jack Perry

HIT – This was the greatest four way match in the history of the sports and mapped out to perfection. Several times it looked like Darby Allin would win, with high spot after high spot. It was easily the greatest match of all four men’s carers. A match of the year candidate for 2023 and one that fans will talk about for the next 20 years.

Blackpool Combat Club defeats The Elite with help from their newest member Konosuke Takeshita.

Hold – The internet smart mark geeks have to be loving this one.  If they popped over Wheeler Yuta, then Konosuke Takeshita has to be a like a second Christmas for these dorks. Instead of AEW adding someone already on their massive roster, in desperate need of push, they decide to elevate Konosuke Takeshita, someone who made “a name” for himself somewhere else.

Despite that, the match itself was great!
