Hathaway Brown holds off Walsh Jesuit, 10-9

Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio – Thanks to a strong scoring effort from Meg Gannon and Emily Morgan, the Hathaway Brown Blazers defeated the host Walsh Jesuit Warriors, 10-9, Thursday evening.

Corinne Sanders put Walsh Jesuit ahead, 1-0, eight minutes into the first half. Three minutes later, senior Anna Mee knotted it up for Hathaway Brown. Sanders responded with another goal 90 seconds later to give the Warriors back the lead, 2-1.

The Blazers would respond with a pair of goals less than a minute apart from each other to take back the lead. First, Emily Morgan knotted the score at 2 at the 11:44 mark, then Meg Gannon added a goal of her own to give Hathaway Brown the lead, 3-2.

Morgan would add her second goal of the game with 4:21 left in the first half to increase the Blazer lead to 4-2. Senior Mary Hoffman responded with a goal late in the first half to make the score 4-3 going into halftime.

Hathaway Brown got their offense going in a big way in the second half.

Meg Gannon scored 40 seconds in to give the Blazers the lead, 5-3. Amelia Dillon responded with a goal for Walsh Jesuit to cut the deficit to 5-4. Gannon then added two quick goals within two minutes of each other, increasing the Hathaway Brown lead to 7-4. Emily Morgan got in on the fun with a pair of goals of her own, and the Blazer lead swelled to 9-4 with 17:32 remaining.

Walsh Jesuit would not go down quietly, as they went on a rally of their own. Madie Tomei scored with 14:38 left, and Olivia O’Toole added a goal of her own, cutting the Warrior deficit to 9-6 with 13:24 left.

Meg Gannon responded by scoring for the fifth time on the evening, increasing the Blazer lead to 10-6.

Lauren Vitantonio responded with a goal to make the score 10-7 with 10:33 left. Another goal, this one from Jackie Holtzer, made the score 10-8 with 8:27 to play.

After a turnover, Walsh Jesuit further cut into their deficit with Lauren Vitantonio’s second goal of the evening at the 2:23 mark in the second half. However, Hathaway Brown held on the rest of the way to pick up the victory.

Hathaway Brown (10-5) hosts North Canton Hoover on Saturday, May 6th. They were led by senior Meg Gannon, who had five goals for the Blazers. Sophomore Emily Morgan had four.

Walsh Jesuit (10-6) hosts Brunswick on Monday, May 8th. Corinne Sanders, Jackie Holtzer and Lauren Vitantonio each had a pair of goals.
