Parma Heights, OH The #4 Midview Middies played as perfect a game as you could imagine. They never trailed, won by 34 points, and oh, they captured their first District Championship in program history to boot. Midview suffocated the #3 Brunswick Blue Devils from the start and cruised to a 58-24 victory.

“Tonight we did something great and moving forward we have to continue to be great.” That will continue to be the message throughout the rest of the tournament for Middies head coach, Brittney McNamara-Cole.

Since joining the Southwestern Conference during the 2015-16 season, its been a long journey to prominence for the girls basketball program. Before McNamara-Cole was brought on for the start of the 2021 campaign, their combined record until then was 27-87. Midview’s severely struggled in conference play as well, never exceeding more than four wins.

Now, the program is 38-10 overall (22-6 in conference play) and a girls basketball District title is going to be on glorious display at Midview High School.

“It’s huge. That was my goal from day one,” McNamara-Cole said. “I’m really excited that its finally here”.

She can be quoted back to her inauguration when she said, “I want to build a program that celebrates all parts of the journey. With hard work and dedication, I believe we can win the SWC, a district championship and ultimately compete for a state title.” She certainly fulfilled that promise to the school and her players by orchestrating a sound game plan right from tip-off.

Midview’s defense was relentless, blanking the Blue Devils 12-0 after the first quarter. The anchor to their defense is 6′ 5″ center, Mary Meng. Any drive Brunswick made to the hoop was either altered or rejected at the top. Meng collected five blocks while adding 11 points.

Another one of McNamara-Cole’s shinning stars under the bright lights was Olivia DiFranco. She scored ten of the 12 points in the first frame and continued to display greatness throughout the evening.

DiFranco led all scorers with 29 on an efficient 12-19 from the floor. She either got to the paint moving with or without the ball or created opportunities for herself. “Anything is possible with that kid, just unbelievable on and off the floor. She has no ceiling.” said McNamara-Cole

This team looks to have no ceiling as they will do battle with the Archbishop Hoban Knights to keep their exciting run going. Brunswick ends their terrific season at 19-5 as the District Champion runners-up.

Magnificat High School Crowned Queen of the Dogs!
