Magnificat Blue Streaks Capture 39-30 Rivalry Win at St. Joe’s

In what was an electric atmosphere tonight at St. Joe’s, the Jaguars dropped the rivalry game to the Magnificat Blue Streaks 39-30 in a heated affair.  Remarkably, the Blue Streaks only made one field goal in the first and fourth quarters and it didn’t matter because they did everything else very well when the shots just wouldn’t drop. They moved the ball well, hit 8 foul shots and played airtight defense in the big win.

The Blue Streaks we’re led by Julia Hall with 14 and JaCai Onunwor with 7 while Abigail Rosol had 5 and Sophia Wilson had 6. Freshman Gemma Wichmann is one to watch, she had 5 points in the win and exuded a ton of raw talent out there for a 9th grader in a huge game.

For the Jaguars, they can learn from this loss as they continued to play great defense and worked hard all four quarters.  Case in point, the 2 combined field goals they let up in the first and fourth quarter I mentioned earlier.  One thing that caused issues tonight in the loss for the Jaguars was the 10 foul shots they missed as they shot 7 of 17 from the line.  This Jaguar team is insanely talented and well coached, it was just one of those nights.

St. Joe’s were led by Maddie Roth and Taylor Gregory with 8 points each.  Morgan Wearsch and Elise Larsen had 4 each while Abbey Flannery and Melanie Alvarenga had 3 each.

As mentioned, the two teams combined to only make 3 field goals in the first quarter as the Blue Streaks took an 8-4 lead after one.  The Blue Streaks benefited from 6 Jaguar fouls as they went 6 of 8 in the first quarter from the line. The only bucket came from Rosol with 51 seconds left on the clock.

The Blue Streaks book marked the second quarter on a Sophia Wilson three ball to start and end it as they built a 20-13 lead at the break.  At one point in the quarter, the Blue Streaks led 11-4 when the Jaguars rattled off 7 straight to tie it at 11.

That 7-point second quarter run by the Jaguars, wasn’t the only one from them, as they started the third quarter on another 7-0 run to tie it at 20 with big buckets from Taylor Gregory, Morgan Wearsch and Maddie Roth in the stretch.  The Blue Streaks answered again and build the lead back up to 34-24 by quarters end.

Head Coach Danny Gallagher had this to say about his teams ability to stop runs and take control several times, “We knew how good they are and that they would go on runs, but we also knew that if we had the tough mentality we would get stops and we could regain our lead.  Our guards are really good with the ball and valuing the ball, we didn’t have a ton of turnovers because of it.”

The Blue Streaks went on to win 39-30.  Good luck to both teams as they clash again on January 25th.

  1. I am a Jags parent and a little jealous of the leadership by Rosol. Just heard tonight the Mom is a Joe’s alumni. Good luck to both teams moving forward.

  2. Its a shame all the local kids leave their home schools and venture out to private schools. If they’d stay, imagine all the talent they’d have.

    1. Why do you think it is a shame? Do you know the reasons why each and every person choose Catholic over public? Why not just be a good person and cheer on every kid. Their tax dollars stay at least…

  3. What’s a shame is the assistant Joe’s coach quitting on the girls and moving on. What’s that show the girls it’s ok to be a quitter! I don’t know the details but come on!!
