Miami OH entered Infocision stadium after back-to-back losses where their offense struggled to put points on the board, Akron has suffered six straight losses and are looking to pick up their first conference win of the year. Miami looked solid in this game with their defense stepping up big for the 27-9 win. Both team’s offenses had its issues, it was Miami who was able to push their issues aside to win this game.
Both offenses struggled to get anything going on their first few possessions, especially in the run game. It would be Miami who finally found their rhythm as an offense scoring on what could be considered a complete drive. They worked with a short field and utilized their running and passing attack to get to the endzone for the quick lead. In the end it was Gabbert who connected with Nate Muersch in the endzone for the lead.
The Zips responded back with a solid possession of their own but could not finish the drive the way they intended. Akron settled for a field goal by Cory Smigel making the Red Hawks lead seven to three in the second quarter.
The third quarter was more of the same for both teams as Miami grabbed complete control of this ball game while Akron could not get things to go their way. Akron had drives down the field and entered the red zone but penalties and turnovers ended drives in critical moments for Joe Moorhead’s Zips.
Akron couldn’t score but could keep the score close in the third quarter before Miami got things rolling once again in the fourth. A field goal was all this offense could do as the RedHawks swarming defense took over the game the rest of the way.
DJ Irons for the Zips was leading his team down the field approaching the redzone, Jacquez Warren intercepts the pass and takes it 62 yards for a touchdown. This was it for scoring the remainder of the ball game for Miami.
Irons connected with Alex Adams in the endzone to put a touchdown on the board for the Zips. This didn’t have any effect on the outcome of the game. Akron’s losing streak extends to seven while Miami has broken their two-game losing streak.
