St. Ed’s Soars to 48-6 Holy War Victory Over St. Ignatius

Parma, OH – St. Ed’s did everything possible to ruin Chuck Kyles last Holy War game with a dominating 48-6 victory over their rivals St. Ignatius. They ran the ball at will and scored on almost every single possession.

Casey Bullock played smart and hard as he led the Eagles.  Bullock finished 5 of 7 on the night with 3 touchdowns passes.  He did his real damage with is feet as he ran for 55 yards on 6 attempts to keep the chains moving.

Running the ball was the story of the night, as the Eagles scored on their first 7 of 8 possessions.  It could have been 8 of 8 but they had a small mishap at that goal line on their first possession.  Marvin Bell was the story again tonight folks, Bell went for 111 yards on 14 carries while scoring once as well.  Joshua Gribble also ran at will, totaling 96 yards on 15 carries with a score.

The top Eagle receiving threat was Kyan Mason with 2 catches for 2 touchdowns and 39 yards. He also took a few jet sweeps to help move the chains.

St. Ignatius saw things go from bad to worse when their starting quarterback Joshua Papesh went down to injury in the first half.  Backup quarterback Quinn Woidke did his best to get the ball moving, but the Eagles defense held him to 7 of 16 for 63 yards.  He did rush for 57 yards on 9 carries with a score.

Coach Lombardo rolled the dice on the opening drive by going for it on fourth and short from midfield.  Marvin Bell paid off his gamble and made the first down run to keep their drive going.  It was a steady diet of runs as Marvin Bell led the way along with Josh Gribble and Kyan Mason as they went 70 plus yards and took nearly 7 minutes off the clock. It would all be for not as the Eagles were intercepted at the goal line by Sean Martin off a tipped pass.

St. Ed’s would get it right back after a quick three and out following a punt from the very back of the St. Ignatius endzone.  This time, it would take one play for 5 seconds as Casey Bullock connected with a wide-open Brian Sullivan to draw first blood.

It looked for a second that the Wildcats were forced into their second straight three and out, until their punter was roughed up, and the St. Ignatius Wildcats had a chance to go right back on the field.  On the next play, it was Papesh finding Jonathan Merimee for 31 yards. However, Papesh was banged up on the play and had to leave the game. The drive would eventually stall on downs the Edwards 37.

Ed’s went right back to the run game and stormed down the field.  A big run of 26 yards by Bell got them cooking.  This set up a beautiful 20-yard touchdown pass from Bullock to Kyan Mason as he squeezed falling down in the back of the endzone to make it 14-0 with 10:22 to play in the opening half.

Quinn Woidke stepped up big on the next Wildcat drive for the injured Papesh.  Woidke struck with his legs first with a 26-yard jaunt up the middle of the field. He then completed three straight passes to the Haddad brothers as the Wildcats moved it to inside the Eagle 31-yard line.  It would begin to stall as St. Ignatius faced a 4th and 7 from the St. Ed’s 24-yard line.

They converted on a 15-yard toss to Cody Haddad over the middle. Eventually, Woidke would finish it himself with a 9-yard touchdown run to slice into the Eagles lead.  The extra point was blocked by Johnny Hutton however, and the score remained 14-6.

The Eagles continued to pound the ground on their next drive as Bullock and Bell combined to run 55 yards on a few plays to score.  The scoring punch itself came on a Marvin Bell 26-yard blast over the edge, stiff-arming would-be tacklers while dancing down the sidelines the whole time. Extending the lead to 21-6 with little resistance.

After Joshua Gribble piled up the rushing yards on the next Eagle drive, the Green and Gold were right back in scoring position in no time. This time around it was Casey Bullock finding Kyan Mason on a wheel route for a 19-yard touchdown strike as they moved the lead to 28-6 with 40 seconds left in the half.

After forcing another Wildcat 3 and out, the Eagles started their first drive of the second half from their own 48-yard line. After a couple of good Bullock runs moved it across midfield, a 15-yard personal foul on St. Ignatius put it on the Wildcat 25-yard line. Marvin Bell did the bulk of the work from there, taking it down to the goal line.  Josh Groudle took it from there for the score!  This moved the score to 34-6 as they two-point conversion failed.

A St. Ignatius blocked punt by Antonio Bolden rolled into the endzone where Wyatt Gedeon of the Eagles jumped on it to score for St. Ed’s and extend the lead to 41-6 as the clock began to wind. Later on, Joshua Gribble would pound one in from 10 yards, to make it 48-6 with 7:17 to go.

Tonight’s player of the game is St. Ed’s running back Marvin Bell who went for 111 yards on 14 carries while scoring once as well.

Next week St. Ed’s look to stay hot as they host Clarkson North from Toronto.  Meanwhile, St. Ignatius will host Moeller.
