The week we have all been waiting for, it is finally MACTION time! The first week of conference play begins, and on top of it was homecoming week for Kent State. Coming into the game the surprising 2-2 and Ohio Bobcats come into town for a Mac East matchup. How would Kent State fare as 13 point favorites in the MAC opener?

This was a dog fight game all week, neither side really able to gain. Kent State scored first in this homecoming game. And from there Kent State would not score again until the fourth quarter. But in the fourth quarter and overtime it was an offensive shootout from both sides in the Mac opener.

Players of the game, there are multiple. Dante Cephas has to be mentioned first, Cephas finished the game with 13 catches and 246 yards receiving, and a touchdown. The 246 yards is a school record. Cephas dominated Ohio’s defense in that final quarter and overtime in a 31-24 win for the Golden Flashes.

Then Marquez Cooper, he finished with 240 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns. It was an unreal performance for the junior running back. Cooper did have a fumble in this game, but Coach Sean Lewis said in the post game press conference that he said that was Cooper’s one. And they kept giving him the ball, and he did not make them regret that decision.

Next up is Colin Schlee, Schlee stats in this game are impressive, finishing 398 passing yards and a touchdown pass. However, Schlee was fumbling the ball multiple times today. Something that is going to need to be cleaned up as MAC play continues.

Then on the losing side, the Bobcats stand out was Sam Wiglusz. Wiglusz finished the game with 115 yards receiving and a touchdown.

While the Golden Flashes did come away with the win it was a very disappointing performance for the team, a week after an impressive performance against the defending champions on the road and they were supposed to get crushed, and showing out the way they did last week, more was expected out of the team today.

Coach Lewis after the game did admit to an emotional lull after the win today from last week’s performance. The play today was sloppy on all sides. Whether it was Schlee fumbling, Cooper having a fumble, and penalties all over the place, this was a very unexpected performance from the team that hung in there with Georgia for the whole game.

As MAC will continue this game can be used as a teaching moment for the Golden Flashes. How to clean up the penalties. How to properly hold onto the football especially in a close game. And next against the Miami Redhawks they are going to have a better performance if they expect to start the MAC 2-0.
