Week two of the 2022 college football season was filled with upsets and close games. It was the most unpredictable week of the sport. Marshall beat number eight, Notre Dame in South Bend. Appalachian State beat number six Texas A&m. Alabama barely beat Texas, and in the MAC there was a game that went to seven overtimes, in the Eastern Kentucky and Bowling Green game, so would Kent State at Oklahoma continue that stretch of close and crazy games in this early season matchup?
In the first half it looked like it was well on its way to being maybe another crazy upset. Oklahoma’s offense could not get it going to start the game. In Oklahoma’s first four possessions it was all punts. Kent’s defense was stopping them early in the game. By the time the second quarter had started the Sooner offense had not scored and was held to less than 50 yards.
Kent State’s offense was putting together impressive drives off the legs of running back Marquez Cooper and quarterback Collin Schlee who was also having a great start with his legs and mobility in the early portion of the game. Only problem was the Kent State offense could not get into the endzone. Whether it was dropped passes and negative plays for the Golden Flashes they could not find a way into the endzone. But were up 3-0 at one point in the game.
However the Sooner offense would eventually wake up late in the second quarter on a Dillion Gabriel pass to wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr, the drive was a 52 second possession for the Sooners, and that is all it took to get the game well out of reach in this week two matchup. From there it was a dominant performance for the Sooners and the star of the night for the Sooners and their offense was Mims, Mims finished the game with seven receptions and 163 yard, and two touchdowns in the 33-3 win over Kent State. His speed crushed the Flashes all second half, getting wide open. One play was a 58 yard touchdown reception from Gabriel. Gabriel finished the game with 296 passing yards and three touchdown passes.
Although the second half did not go the way Kent wanted. Being in the game at halftime was a great sign for the team. The player of the night was Schlee, although his 131 passing yards and no touchdowns may not leap off the page. It was his mobility tonight that gave the Flashes a chance early in the game. Schlee and Cooper both finished with 55 yards rushing in tonight’s loss.
The final score may indicate this game was ugly from start to finish, but that was not true. Kent came to play in the first half. Coach Sean Lewis had his guys ready to go. Luckily for Kent State they come back home next Saturday for the home opener of the 2022 season against Long Island, this can be a great win for the team after a very impressive start in the week two loss.
