St. Ed’s Wins in a Thriller Over Cherry Creek Bruins

Story by Sidney Hampton

On Saturday afternoon, St. Edward High School took on the visiting Cherry Creek Bruins all the way from Colorado. This was a high-stakes game for both sides as both teams are defending state champions. In the low-scoring contest, the St. Ed’s Eagles defeated the Bruins with a final score of 13-9.

Eagle running back Marvin Bell’s ability to make plays towards the end of the game was crucial to the Eagles’ victory. Bell finished the game with 103 rushing yards on 17 carries.

In the first quarter, continuous short gains led by Jordan Herron and Carlson Tann of Cheery Creek ended in a field goal for the Bruins to put the first points of the game on the board. The defense of the Eagles led by players such as Seamus Kennedy and Michael Kilbane held the Bruins to settle for this field goal rather than scoring a touchdown.

The Eagles’ offense had a hard time converting downfield which caused them to stick with their run game for much of the first quarter. In the second quarter, small gains proceeded by both teams largely attributed to Charlson Tann from Cherry Creek but resulted in no change to the scoreboard. Out of the 24 minutes of the first half, the Bruins had offensive possession for 17 minutes as the Eagle defense could not get off the field on third down.

The second half of the game is where the Eagles gained momentum. In the third quarter, St. Ed’s hurry-up offense led by Bullock and Bell put the Bruins on their heels resulting in an Eagle touchdown by Marvin Bell. Their defense kept up this energy with a huge sack by Michael Kilbane.

At the end of the third quarter, St. Edward was winning 7-3. Cherry Creek opened the final quarter with large gains including a 32-yard catch to Jorden Herron leading to a touchdown by Ismael Cisse to make the score 9-7 with 4 minutes remaining.

The Eagles encountered a huge setback with a 20-yard penalty but were able to convert on short passing yards and a huge run by the quarterback, Casey Bullock. A big 12-yard gain by Brian Sullivan put the Eagles into field goal territory but the persistence and grit of Bullock resulted in an Eagle touchdown and a score of 13-9 to end the game as he snuck it in for the win across the goal line.

St. Edward Football extends its winning streak to 10 in a hard-fought game by both sides. The player of the game goes out to the Eagles quarterback Casey Bullock for his resilience, play-making abilities, and his winning touchdown at the end of the game.

Both teams filled with adrenaline and pride fought every play, through the heavy humidity. Fortunately, the crunch time plays from St Ed’s got the job done for the Eagles at First Energy of Lakewood Stadium. Next week, the Eagles are back at home on Saturday to take on Elder out of Cincinnati.
