Maple Heights pulls away in second half, defeats Willoughby South, 30-6

Maple Heights, Ohio – Maple Heights defeated Willoughby South, 30-6, on Friday evening in a non-conference matchup.

In the first quarter, the two teams traded stops, and Bobby Tomasic recovered a fumble for the Rebels.

In the second quarter, the Maple defense halted South’s drive, thanks to stopping a Tyrone Singleton run on fourth down.

From there, they took over on downs, and capped off the drive with a score thanks to a huge fourth-down conversion.

Dawon King tossed the ball off to Ashton Pugh, who tossed it to a wide open Jaylin Cannon in the end zone. Senior Ed Robinson III converted the two-point try and the Mustangs led 8-0 with 7:58 left in the second.

Late in the first half, Quinten Wilson picked off a pass and took it deep into Maple territory, but a forced fumble gave the Mustangs the ball right back.

In the third quarter, Maple looked to add to their lead. However, a bad snap on fourth down set up South with great field position. They would take advantage of a personal foul penalty to get on the board.

Senior Colin Quinlan rushed for a two-yard score with 4:38 left in the third. However, theĀ ensuing two-point try was no good, and Maple held the lead, 8-6.

Not too long after, Ed Robinson III broke free for an 87-yard touchdown run for the Mustangs. The ensuing two-point try was good, and Maple led 16-6 with 3:43 left in the third.

After another defensive stop, Robinson III went in once again to put the Mustangs up 22-6 early in the fourth.

Devin Poole took it in from a yard out, and Ashton Pugh had a nice catch on a fade to the back of the end zone for the final ponts.

Mustang senior quarterback Dawon King went 11 of 16 passing for 126 yards. He also had 7 carries for 60 yards.

For the Rebels, senior Colin Quinlan had 10 carries for 79 yards and a score. He went 8 of 11 passing for 101 yards through the air. Tyrone Singleton had 18 carries for 73 yards.

Maple Heights (2-1) takes on Shaw next Friday night to open up Lake Erie League.

Willoughby South (1-2) hosts Madison to open up Western Reserve conference play.
