The St. Francis Red Flash march into Infocision stadium to take on the Akron Zips. The Zips have a lot to prove this year after a disappointing season a year ago. Coach Joe Moorhead takes the reigns as head coach for the Zips as a culture change is in place for Akron.
DJ Irons shows his speed on the very first play as he uses his legs to gain a quick 31 yards for the Zips on their first possession. A holding penalty pushed the Zips back to a third and long situation. That wouldn’t stop Irons on the first drive as he would connect with WR Shocky Jacques-Louis for about 20 yards to keep the drive alive.
Akron would stall out after a few big plays on their first possession setting up a 16-yard field goal to get to a small but early lead (3-0 Zips).
QB Justin Sliwoski gave St.Francis a boost using his legs to get the Red Flash at the Akron redzone. He made two fantastic plays to set up a 25-yard field goal attempt that tied the game (3-3).
Both teams struggled to get much going on back-to-back possessions. Akron stalled out for the second time in a row while the Red Flash moved the ball down the field in seven plays for a Damon Horton touchdown. This gives St. Francis the lead at the start of the second quarter (10-3 SFU).
Akron took this personally as they would march down the field in 10 plays to tie the ball game up. Irons connected with TE Triston Bank for a nine-yard touchdown (10-10). The touchdown was setup by a fourth down conversion and a 17-yard pass from Irons to Jacques-Louis.
Both teams could not find any offense late in the first half until a pass by Cole Dylan who came in during the second quarter helping St. Francis regain the lead with another field goal (13-10 SFU). Akron was given one last chance in the first half; nothing would come of this chance as the Zips turned the ball over to end the half.
St. Francis walked into the locker room with the lead intact over Akron 13-10.
St. Francis had an opportunity to drive down to the Akron side of the field after the Zips failed to move the ball at the start of the half. The Red Flash had a good drive but settled for a 38 yard field goal attempt to increase the lead (16-10 SFU).
Akron took advantage of only giving up three points, A steady rush attack set up a 41-yard touchdown pass from DJ Irons to the big time WR Jacques-Louis to take the lead (17-16 Akron). RB Cam Wiley was a crucial part of this drive with four carries that led to the touchdown.
St Francis failed to make the field goal, giving Akron another chance to extend the lead. With 8:34 left in the game Akron extended their drive on a third and very long thanks to Irons connecting with Daniel George for 34 yards. Akron kept things rolling, four plays in a row to Cam Wiley led to a seven yard rushing touchdown to give the Zips their biggest lead of the day. The point after is no good due to a block (23-16 Akron).
This drive by the Zips wouldn’t mean much, the Red Flash made a quick drive to tie the ball game up (23-23).
Both teams had a chance at the end of regulation to win, both sides stalled out forcing this game to go to overtime.
Irons for the Zips would take a sack to start overtime, he come right back with a 28-yard pass to his favorite target Jacques-Louis. This set up a Cam Wiley five yard run to take the lead in overtime (30-23 Akron).
St. Frances converted a fourth down to give themselves one last attempt to tie the game or take the lead. A Second down pass by Sliwoski got intercepted by Tyson Durant in the endzone to win the game for the Zips.
The Zips start off the Joe Moorhead era with a win 30-23. Akron travels up to Michigan next week to take on the Spartans of Michigan State.
