Miami (OH) RedHawks
MAC East
Coach: Chuck Martin ninth year with team
Last year’s record: 7-6
Overview:
The Miami RedHawks finished last year with a 7-6 record and a second-place finish in the MAC East behind Kent State. Miami is a team that is the projected winner of the MAC East and headed to Detroit for the championship game. The Red Hawks have returning JR QB Brett Gabbert taking snaps behind center for the third straight year. Last year Gabbert was hurt causing AJ Mayer to take the snaps. With Mayer gone, Gabbert will be the man once again for the RedHawks. He is the biggest QB prospect for Miami since Ben Roethlisberger. The WR unit lost their number one guy last season. The WR core is still deep with many returners and two transfers from Indiana. There may not be a number one option at the start of the season, but a group that compliments each other well. Miami lost most of their defense, including a loading DB and DE group. This defense will have a lot of growing pains this season, offensive shootouts should be a common thing with this group.
Dom’s Overlook:
The RedHawks are a team that I expect a lot of exciting football from this season. Brett Gabbert (the brother of Blaine Gabbert) is arguable the best QB in not just the East but in the entire conference. I’m interested to see if his junior campaign will land him in the sights of NFL scouts due to his last name and his numbers compared to Big Ben when he was at Miami. Miami doesn’t have a tough schedule with Central Michigan and Toledo missing from the conference slate. They play at NIU giving us an exciting game late in the season. If you are into the over under in points Miami is the team for you, Miami should be a shoe in for the over in points for nearly every game they will play this year. The offense looks strong while the defense lost a lot of great players and are replaced by a lack of experience.
Prediction:
Out of all the MAC teams they have the easiest non conference opponents. Kentucky, Robert Morris, Cincinnati, and Northwestern. Two of these games can be wins depending on how good Northwestern is. Robert Morris is a FCS school that struggles, Miami should take care of business for their first home game. The lowest amount of wins I have for Miami is seven, they can max out at about 10 if they can upset Northwestern on the road and beat Kent State and NIU in some crucial conference games. With how the MAC East looks this year they will finish either first or second.
