The Bruins received the opening kickoff and started at the 30 yd line. Junior running back Marquise Hall had plenty of carries on the night as Padua mixed nicely between run and pass all night. Junior QB Tyler Tusai hit Sophomore receiver Riley Cervanka for 21 yards on the first drive. A couple plays later Tusai threw up a jump ball at the front corner of the goal line and Cervanka came down with the ball for a touchdown. After the PAT the Bruins led you 7-0.

Holy Name’s first drive led to a punt as QB Jayvon Williams and fellow Senior RB Kristian Sanchez could not break a big play early. The rest of the quarter the two teams were being somewhat conservative and playing field position, until late in the first quarter. A sustained drive had the Green Wave near the goaline and just into the second quarter Sanchez plunged into the end zone for a TD and now tied at 7 a piece.

At the 4:37 mark, Tusai found Cervanka wide open for a beautiful passing Touchdown. A missed PAT and the Bruins were up 13-7.

Late in the quarter the aggressive play calling of Padua led to an interception by Tusai and put the Green Wave on their own 42 yard line. On the first play QB Williams hit Senior RB Austin Wondolowski in the right flat.

He bounced off the first tackler and rumbled up the sideline into the end zone for a big touchdown. This with just one minute left in the half. Score was Holy Name 14, Padua 13 at the break.

The first half was like two boxers that were feeling each other out. These teams were playing field position and playing a little conservative in the half. A key interception late in the second quarter was the difference so far.

The second half again started with a series of punts and field position. A nice drive and some great running from RB Hall led to a field goal for the Bruins. At 5:09, Padua now led 16-14. The third quarter ended with the same score, as the Bruins were getting set to punt.

Holy Name had trouble moving the ball at times last night, but the Green Wave’s QB Williams is very quick and runs very well. He is very capable creating big plays. Making it difficult for defenses. On the first play of the fourth quarter he showed that.

The Bruin’s turned it over on downs. Williams threw a deep ball from his own 20 to Senior Wideout Kevin Pivanka who went up high for an amazing catch at the 35-yard line. As the defender fell, Pivanka sprinted into the end zone for a quick strike 80 yd TD. With 11:37 left, Wave was up 21-16.

The Bruins had a few more tries to win the game, but as well as Hall ran all night, he never quite broke one for that big play that could have turned the game. The Bruins had a nice drive late in the game. W

ith 1:35 left the Bruin’s QB Tusai came up with a scramble that fell short as Green Wave’s Senior Sanchez sacked him to end Padua’s night. Final score was 21-16 Holy Name wins the big opener.

Coming off turnovers on downs, Holy Name was able to strike twice.

The big play capability of the Green Wave was in the end the difference in the game. There were two big plays for touchdowns, a little too much for the Bruins to overcome. They had their chances and played a very solid game, but Holy Name was the better team in week one.
