by Cleveland, Ohio – Duke commit Gabe Nard threw six innings of one-hit shutout ball Saturday afternoon, helping Saint Ignatius to a 6-0 victory over Cardinal at Talty Field.
Nard struck out the side in the top of the first, and Cardinal junior pitcher (Kent State commit) Jake Bean worked around a single in his half.
The Ignatius offense came alive in the second inning, sending nine to the plate.
Max Palinski led off with a single to left. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Andrew Apanasewicz legged out an infield hit to bring Palinski home, putting Ignatius ahead, 1-0. He advanced to second on a fielders’ choice, and scored on a single by Nick Frontino.
Nard followed with a two-run single down the line to left, , increasing the lead to 4-0.
After a walk, and an advance to second thanks to a passed ball, Anthony Paskell hit an RBI triple to make the score 5-0.
Sawyer Solitaria capped the inning with a run-scoring single to increase the lead to 6-0.
From there, the pitching took over on both sides.
Ignatius loaded the bases in the fourth, but relief pitcher Logan Strever (who came on in the third), worked out of the jam unscathed.
Gabe Nard had an amazing outing, throwing a no-hitter through the fifth inning.
However, a single by Cardinal infielder Carter Tucker in the sixth inning ended the no-hit bid. Joey Soltis followed up with a walk, putting two on for the Huskies.
However, Nard worked out of the jam, getting two grounders and a strikeout.
Sophomore Logan Strever worked out of another jam in the sixth inning. He threw four innings of shutout relief for the Huskies.
Wildcats reliever James Corrigan had a pair of strikeouts in the seventh to end the game and finish the one-hitter.
St. Ignatius improves to 14-5 and travels to Gilmour Academy Monday afternoon.
Cardinal drops to 9-6 and travels to Crestwood to continue CVC Valley Division play Monday afternoon.
