The Greater Cleveland Conference has only six teams, but is known as of the most competitive conferences in Northeast Ohio.

Friday was further proof.

A Rayquan Thompson layup late in the fourth quarter propelled them to a 65-60 win over visiting Brunswick Friday night.

Brunswick led 13-11 after the first stanza. Zach Eyssen had eight points.

The second quarter was a virtual carbon-copy of the first. Both teams would swap the lead back and forth. Solon led 36-34 at the half. Cam Brown had 11 of his 13 off the bench for the Comets. Sophomore Jeremy Wilson also had a rim-rattling slam.

In the third quarter, Brunswick knocked down four three-pointers. Zach Eyssen had a pair, and Brayden Hamilton had the other pair. Solon would lead 50-46 at the end of three.

The Comets would increase their lead to nine in the fourth quarter before Brunswick made their rally.

Cameron Cruz converted a layup to give Brunswick a 60-59 lead with less than two minutes left. It was the Blue Devils’ first lead since the second quarter.

In the quarter, Eyssen and Cruz hit big-time buckets to cut into their deficit. The defense also forced turnovers when needed.

However, Solon responded.

On their ensuing possession, junior guard Rayquan Thompson drove to the hole for a go-ahead layup with 1:34 left. He sank the and-one to increase the score to 62-60.

Brunswick attempted to tie the game, but Zach Eyssen’s layup attempt fell short. The Blue Devils were then forced to foul.

Rayquan Thompson sank a pair to push the Comet lead to 64-60, and Sam Marbury added one more for the final margin.

Solon (9-4, 4-2 GCC) hosts Lutheran East in a non-conference showdown Saturday night. Friday night’s game begins a tough stretch of opponents that include Mentor, St. Eds, and Twinsburg.

Brunswick (12-5, 3-3 GCC) hosts Nordonia in a non-conference showdown next Tuesday.

Senior forward Zach Eyssen had 23 points to lead the Blue Devils. Senior guard Cameron Cruz and senior forward Brayden Hamilton each had 16.
