The Comets used a total team effort to defeat the visiting Elyria Pioneers Saturday by a score of 51-48 in a thrilling game.  The Comets got points from 7 different players, including 12 each from Natalie Pleban and Kayla Ferancy.  Pleban did most of her damage from deep while Ferancy showed incredible accuracy from the foul line.

Jayla Cruz was sharp again with 7 while Jocelyn George also lit it up off the bench with 6 points from beyond the arc. Bradyn Silvasy was her steady self with 7 more while Ava Darmos finished with 5.  Peyton Roberts was everywhere on both ends of the court, and also finished with 2 points on the night.

For Elyria, it was Hannah Miller lighting it up from deep as she finished with 17 points, including 15 of those from three point range. Davionna Wet had 9, Jaidah Gonzalez checked in with 8 while Reginae Swanson finished with 6.

Amherst fell behind early 9-8 thanks in part to some hot three pointing shooting from the Pioneers.  Elyria sharp shooters Elizabeth Aulisio and Hannah Miller both let it fly from deep to help gain them the lead.

The Comets came soaring back however with buckets from Cruz, Darmos and Silvasy to reclaim and run the lead out to 14-9 with a minute to go in the first. Hannah Miller and Jocelyn George would exchange three pointers to close out the quarter at 17-12 Amherst as 5 different Comets scored in the quarter.

The first half of the second quarter would start off slow with not much scoring.  However, another three ball from George, helped Amherst increase their lead to 23-16 with 3:52 to go.  The Pioneers would answer with 5 straight of their own, three coming from Jaidah Gonzalez as well as a bucket from Reginae Swanson to cut the deficit to 23-21. The half would end 25-24 Comets after a Davionna West hit a three ball at the buzzer for the Pioneers.

Amherst came out gunning in the third quarter.  A three point play the hard way from Kayla Ferancy started them off.  Then, a three ball from the corner from Cruz extended their lead to 31-24 just one minute into the half.

The score stayed pretty even for awhile before a Natalie Pleban three pointer made it 38-28 with only a minute left in the quarter.  For the Comets, it was their first 10 point lead of the game.  The next time they touched the ball, Pleban remained red hot draining another one from long distance to increase the lead to 41-28.

Hannah Miller would answer with another three ball for Elyria.  The Natalie Pleban three point show wasn’t over yet however, as she nailed her third in a 45 second span to make it 44-31 Comets as we entered the fourth. Amherst outscored the Pioneers 19-7 in the quarter.

30 seconds into the fourth quarter, another Ferancy foul shot made it 45-31.  It was Ferancy’s sixth made foul shot of the game. The Comets would hang on after a furious Pioneer rally that included two more three balls from Miller to secure the 51-48 win.

  1. Great fight by Elyria. This game should of never been that close . I have watched Amherst play time and time again this year and that coach doesn’t get it . I know he has coached the boys at Lorain High for some years and couldn’t win there … what makes you think he is going to win with the Amherst girls . Way to much talent on the young Amherst team for them to only have 3 wins!
