Padua hung on to win a overtime thriller 46-43 today over Lutheran West in the Rocky River Holiday Classic. 4 of their 6 overtime points came from the foul line as Alyssa Weber had 3 of them to pull off the thrilling come from behind win.  For Weber, the 3 points were part of a 23 point day in which 11 of those points came from the line.

Also scoring for the Bruins in the comeback was Arianna Pomirleanu with 8 points and Michela Cario with 4.  Cario had a big bucket in overtime that they sorely needed to stretch the lead as well.  Eszter Dioszegi had 3 points with 1 coming in overtime as well.  Sarah Hess and Lexi Miller each had 2.

Leading the way for the Longhorns was Evelyn Albers with 12 points including 6 from the charity stripe.  Arryon Esposito had a big tournament and polished it off with 9 more today.  Carina Cedeno had 8 with her second straight big game. Ella McCarthy had 4, all coming from the line and Caelan Mack finished the scoring with 2.

The Longhorns jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first before Webers second three of the quarter slashed the lead to 14-8.  The quarter would end 15-10 as the Longhorns took advantage of several Bruin turnovers and mistakes.  For Lutheran West they spread the ball around perfectly with 6 different players scoring in the quarter.

The Bruins got into foul trouble early into the second quarter as the Longhorns reached the bonus with 5:43 still left in the quarter.  Head Coach Jay Valadez called a timeout with his team down 18-15 and they went on a run out of the timeout to tie it.  It was answered by a 5-0 run from the Longhorns.  The game would go to half with West up 27-21.

The third quarter was pretty much all foul shots as the teams combined to sink 13 of them, keeping the game close as West led 36-34 into the fourth.  The final 8 minutes of regulation were a bit slow until Padua took their first lead of the game 38-36 with 4 minutes to play.  From there both teams went back and forth before sending the game to overtime at 40 all.

Padua led 44-40 with under a minute to go until an Albers three point play made it 44-43.  Padua would then make a bad inbounds pass which gave the Longhorns a chance to win it, but they couldn’t as Padua held on for the win.

  1. That’s was a exciting game . Both teams left it out on the floor. Padua’s coach always seems to make the right adjustments. You can tell he believes in his girls . Watch out when they team is healthy for a nice playoff run .
