Sting will go down as the greatest wrestler of the WCW Era of Wrestling. While WWE WrestleMania has become synonymous with The Undertakers streak and overall impressive record, there is no doubt that Stings 11-1 record at WCW Starrcade was nearly as impressive.
The list of names he has taken on combined with the victories he has attained at WCW’s signature event, are a who’s who of the company’s history. Let’s take a brief look back at why the biggest event in company history was the showcase for the company’s biggest star!
1988 a Tag Match victory with Dusty Rhodes over The Road Warriors
He teamed up with the ultra-popular Dusty Rhodes to defeat a team that was unbeatable at the time in the Road Warriors.
1989 Sting wins a 4-man Round Robin tournament with victories against Ric Flair & The Great Muta
A bit of a slow burn in this one, but with Sting defeating Flair to end the show, it was worth the wait as their top star went out on top.
1990 Sting defeats The Black Scorpion (Ric Flair) in a Cage Match to retain the WCW World Title
This was about as dumb as it gets and a sign that the Jim Herd reign was going to fail miserably. Sting was a new champ and had been getting tormented by someone called, “The Black Scorpion”, sure enough it was Flair.
1991 Sting wins Battle Bowl
A pretty cool concept of tag matches that led to a two ring Battle Royal. It would result in Sting last eliminating Lex Luger to win it all.
1992 Sting defeats Big Van Vader to win the King of Cable Tournament
No one really knew or cared what a “King of Cable” title meant, but Sting was the ultimate good guy and Vader was the evil villain, so it all worked out.
1993 Sting & Road Warrior Hawk defeat the Nasty Boys
A strange year for Sting in a hodge podge team with Hawk, but a win is a win.
1994 Sting defeats Earthquake/ Avalanche
The former Earthquake was seen as a monster in his early days with WCW. Sting would end the mystique quickly as he handled him easily.
1995 Sting defeats Kensuke Sasaki
This victory earned team USA the Championship in a best of seven series.
1997 Sting defeats Hollywood Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Championship
It was the most anticipated and hyped match in Wrestling History with a 16 month build and incredible drama. Sadly, Hogan’s ego ruined what could have been a really great moment in wrestling history.
1999 Sting defeats Lex Luger
Even with WCW starting to sink at this point, it is always fun to see two best friends go at it. It was Crow Sting taking home the victory yet again in this one.
