There were tears of happiness, there were tears of sadness, a championship game always brings on both.  Mix in the fact that some of these girls have been playing together for a decade, and it gets even more emotional. In the end, it was the Olmsted Falls Lady Bulldogs winning the District Championship with a 35-32 gutsy win over SWC Rival Avon.

It was a super tight first quarter that saw Avon land on top 10-8.  Key three pointers by Catie Geiger and Abby Liber helped the Eagles obtain the lead. Liber had an amazing kick drive to a wide open Geiger who sunk one.  A little later Liber had one herself, as part of a 5-point quarter and 9-point game her the fantastic junior.

The Bulldogs defense would clamp down and not allow Liber another field goal the rest of the game. Geiger would also finish with 9 in one of the best games I’ve ever seen her play.

The Bulldogs took command in the second as Kohler went off for 6 of her 9 in the game.  Lauren Galaska and Sara Glover had 3 each in the frame.  That with only allowing Avon 1 field goal in the second, helped the Bulldogs build a 18-14 lead.  It could have been worse for Avon as Liber picked up her second foul 1 minute into the quarter, and Falls entered the bonus with 2:38 it play.

The third quarter was like watching two heavyweight prize fighters go toe to toe.  Alyssa McLellon had 5 big points to help keep the Eagles in it.  Geiger had 3 more and they cut the lead to 27-26 after 3.  The Bulldogs had 3 from Glover, 2 from Allison Milligan and 2 each from Kalich and Kohler.

Both teams had so many chances in the fourth quarter to score, but points were at a premium as neither could find a scoring groove. Geiger buried another 3 pointer with 6:29 to go to tie it at 29.

Then it was Allison “Millison” Milligan stepping up with the shot of her life to sink a three and put Olmsted Falls up 34-31 with 4:33 to go. From there, both teams went ice cold, and the Milligan shot proved to be the game winner.

Olmsted Falls had chance after chance to pull away with foul shots and couldn’t do it.  Avon had several chances to tie the game and also couldn’t do it.

The Bulldogs hung on for the thrilling 35-32 win.  They will now play Strongsville in Sandusky on Tuesday Night. A wild game, a wild night, a fantastic season.  Bulldogs advance.
