The Strongsville Lady Mustangs defeated the Berea-Midpark Lady Titans 72-38 in the Division I District semi-final led by Raegan Bass (19 points) and Taylor Bass (15 points) who combined for 34 points in the victory.
Strongsville jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the Lady Titans early in the first quarter courtesy of a quick start from Reagan Bass. Raegan Bass was 3-of-5 in the first quarter and got to the free-throw line four times sinking all of them.
“Certainly it was a benefit, obviously any coach would like to be in the lead that early,” Head Coach Dawn Thall of the Lady Mustangs said.
Thall went on to talk about the importance of staying focused despite the early lead, “We take it minute by minute and make sure we’re winning every single minute and doing the things we need to do right every time down the floor.”
Strongsville continued to pile on in the second quarter but this time it was Taylor Bass going to work. Taylor Bass hit two triples during the second quarter while Mackenzie Schultz added four second-quarter points. Taylor Bass finished with 15 points while Schulz finished with 7. The Mustangs cruised into halftime with a 41-18 lead.
Reagan Bass shot 0-for-6 from the floor in the second quarter but she didn’t let that deter her, “My teammates were a big help, I didn’t have to rely only on myself. I have everyone on the court with me. Everyone is so diverse with how they play, we have people who can shoot outside but can also drive-in. We played lockdown defense and it helped me and everyone else stay with the momentum and get back into the game.”
Strongsville cruised to the victory led by a solid defensive effort and a deep bench. Junior Ava Kadras scored 9 points off the bench leading a deep Lady Mustang bench that scored 17 points from five different players. Strongsville had three players in double figures, Shelby Sallee scored 14 points.
“We have a really strong group, our substitutions make it really easy for us. We have really quality players and a deep bench so that makes it easy as a coach to get fresh bodies in,” Head Coach Dawn Thall said.
Raegan Bass scored a game-high 19 points and played outstanding defense all night long, “Sometimes it’s hard to keep our focus, we all talk to each other throughout the game. On defense, on offense, just little things. It really helps us stay in the moment.”
Bass proclaimed the Lady Mustangs were trying to go all the way. When asked if they can do it Bass said, “We can do it. We have the energy, we have the community, we have the bond and the chemistry that can get us there.
For the Lady Titans, Lindsey Seballos led the way with 8 points while Lauren Yee chipped in with 7.
Strongsville will take on North Ridgeville, who upset Magnificat 62-57 tonight, Friday night at 7:00 for the District Championship.
