No one anywhere an argue how much of a success this season was for the Cleveland Browns. It was one hell of a run that came up just shy of a upset over the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs away from going to the AFC Championship game. A 22-17 loss to Kansas City was tough, but in no way takes away from their tremendous improvement this season.
At the end of the day, it’s shocking, but the time of possession was only seconds apart and the number of plays only favored KC by three. The costliest play of the game in my opinion, was the fumble by Higgins on the goal line in the closing minutes of the first half. Had he scored on that, then it is more than likely only 16-10 going into halftime and a completely different game.
However, with that being said, they did lose today and here are a few stats / numbers that may explain why.
0 = The number of punts forced by their defense in the entire game
3 = The number of offensive possessions the Browns had in the first half. When you don’t have the ball, you cannot score and it got them down 19-3 at half as Kansas City scored every time they had it. Two touchdowns, and two field goals.
0 = Points off turnovers. The Browns got one major turnover midway through the fourth quarter that gave them the ball, down 22-17 with a chance to score a go-ahead touchdown. They would end up being forced to punt. They then went 7 plays and took 3:51 off the clock, but came away empty. They never got the ball back after that.
6 = The number of carries Nick Chubb had in the first half. Why would you not go to him more on the ground? He would finish the day with 69 yards on 13 carries as he got for spurts in the second half.
50% – The Chiefs third down efficiency rate.
100% = The Chiefs fourth down efficiency rate.
7 for 20 = Jarvis Landry had 7 catches for only 20 yards. Why not stretch the field more?
321 = Passing yards given up by the Browns defense
Too many 3rd and short passes just like browns teams of the past.
That no call of the helmet to helmet cost us the game and when did they take away the taunting penalty?
