The Drew Carey Show

What went wrong –  The show was originally built around the premise that Drew was in love with his childhood best friend Kate, but it never seemed to work out for him. Also, for Cleveland sports lovers this show was fantastic because it featured several Cleveland sports stars both past and present.

The show was great from 1995 – 1998 as it featured a classic rivalry with Drew and co-worker Mimi and even them running a brewery out of Drews garage called “Buzz Beer”.  Then, starting right around that same time, everything went off the rails and never recovered.

Drew finally won the heart of Kate, only to fall on his erection and break his penis the first time they tried to make love after a ridiculous music number that made no sense.  Mimi started dating Drews brother Steve, while that could have been funny, turning him a cross dresser was un-needed and forced.

It also had Drew getting into random marriages that no made little to no sense.  The show then seemed to take the back burner when “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” debuted in 1998 and took off like a rocket.  It went through countless bosses, everyone from Mr. bell to Mr. Wick but the lack of consistency and dramatic twists and turns hurt the show.

Towards the end, they tried everything including a mixed racial relationship between Drew and Wanda Sykes, that also failed miserably.  The show ended with Drew and his girlfriend Kellie trying to get married only moments before they gave birth to their son. By the time the final credits rolled, the only tears were ones of joy as it was mercifully over.

From the beginning that saw Oswald, Lewis, Kate and Drew capture our hearts, to the ending that saw Drew get married six times throughout the shows 9 seasons, it took a simple and fun concept, and made it easily forgettable.
