Age is nothing but a number and 40-year-old Matt Brown showed that tonight with the vicious punching power that has made him a UFC legend. Brown knocked out Dhiego Lima with a thunderous right hand in the middle of the second round to open the main portion of tonight’s card.
For Brown, that is his 16th win in the UFC Welterweight division. That puts him in a tie with Matt Hughes, and only behind Neil Magny (18) and GSP (19) all time in UFC history. He is also now in the top 5 for finishes all time in the UFC with 14.
Brown is now 23-18 all time in MMA. For Lima, the loss is his second in a row, fifth in his last eight fights drops him to 15-9 all time.
Bruno Silva waited a long time to make his UFC debut, but the wait paid off as he finished Wellington Turman by KO at just the 4:45 mark of the fight.
Turman falls to 16-5 all time, and has been knocked out in the first round of his last two UFC fights. Silva is now 20-6 and on a 5 fight win streak.
The main card continued to be knockout heavy in the next bout as Seung Woo Choi put Julian Erosa away with ease. Choi knocked out Erosa in just 1:16. This improved his record to 10-3 overall. After losing his first two UFC fights, he has now won 3 straight. His left hook is deadly!
Marlon Vera is a bad man, and he showed it again tonight with an impressive unanimous victory over Davey Grant. Vera left Grant bloody and beaten and continues to impress me each and every time out. Vera is known for his big win over Sean O’Malley last August, but he is much more than that and someone to keep your eye on.
The Co-Main event featured a very close battle between Heavyweight Sergey Spivak and Aleksei Oleinik. In the end, it was Sergey pulling out the razor thin decision over Oleinik. Something tells me, Oleinik, who has now has 76 MMA fights on his resume, will be back soon. For Sergey, this win improves him to 13-2 overall, and will propel himself into the top 15 if the UFC Heavyweight rankings.
The main event was all Korean Zombie as he handled Dan Ige easily over 5 rounds, winning by unanimous decision. At 17-6, Chan Sung Jung “Zombie” will not be challenging for a title anytime soon, but he continues to earn main event fights. Ige is now 15-4 and this loss hurts his chances at a title shot in the featherweight division.
