2021 SWC Girls Basketball Year End Awards

Juniors of the year

Abbie Gardner & Katie Whitesell of Westlake, also Brooklyn Beeman of North Olmsted.

First let me state that I clearly know that Abby Liber is a junior and won the MVP.  However, knowing Abby, she would want other juniors to be recognized for their incredible efforts too, and that is what this is about. These girls deserve some print too!

Abbie Gardner and Katie Whitesell where what I liked to call, “The Dynamic Duo”.  Watching them play together was magic at times.  The chemistry they had together was excellent and led to multiple victories.

With a new coach, departing All Conference Seniors and early injuries, they could have crumbled but the constant energy and ability if Gardner & Whitesell was a big reason the Demons never folded.

I spoke with head coach Cory Rojeck about the Dynamic Duo.  He had this to say, “Abbie is such a versatile player, both offensively and defensively.  At 5’11”, we have had her defend numerous different positions, and she has done so successfully. Her ability to play both inside and on the perimeter is also a major threat for us.

Katie is a superb athlete, with great length and scoring ability.  Defensively, she does a great job contesting shots and timing blocks.  Offensively, she has great touch around the basket and has a way of finishing really tough shots”

Brooklyn Beeman may have played on a team that didn’t win a single conference game, but you would never know that by watching her play.  She was aggressive with the ball, and could make any shot she needed to.  She could hit the jumper and three pointer, as easily as she could drive the lane.  She also played tremendous defense.

It’s just a shame, that none of these three girls will be playing in the SWC next year.  But all three will be a force in the GLC, I can tell you that right now!  So maybe next year, I’ll my coverage into the GLC  as well? Time will tell…..

    2. What a great way to honor your dad, Don. Who truly is a great man. I’m lucky to have the privilege to know him. I’m also privileged to know the award recipient Allison Milligan as I have had the opportunity to coach her in another sport she excels in – volleyball. Congratulations Allison.
