2021 SWC Girls Basketball Year End Awards

SWC Player of the Year

Abby Liber of Avon

Abby Liber has it all and reminds me of a female version of Magic Johnson at times.  She can score at will but also knows how to pass it to the people around her.  She is unselfish, and gets everyone involved.  She attacks the rim and plays lockdown defense. She can post up on the block, step back and hit a three, or drive to the lane.  Again, she does all three very well.

Her drive and kick has set up countless wide open three pointers for the Eagles.  She averages close to 20 points a game, but could have more if she wasn’t such a great passer.  Again, it takes me back to the style of basketball played by Magic Johnson, and to a certain extent, Lebron James.

Abby is an excellent teammate, leader and winner.  She leads by example and it jumps off the page without ever having to say a word or even print it. I’ve seen her go coast to coast on a fast break layup, and I’ve seen her sprint down the court to break up a fast break layup.  She can do it all, and still has plenty of time in her High School Career to get even better.

Picking an MVP is the toughest job of any reporter out there.  No matter who you select, someone is going to make a case for someone else and I understand that.  To me, I look at the word “valuable” and that is where Liber stood out.  She was the generator of this team, the engine, the fire plug.  She deserves this award.

I spoke with Avon head coach Meghan Larrick who had this to say, “Abby Liber is a great student athlete.  She has a 4.1 GPA in the classroom.  She is a 3-year varsity letter winner, and has been voted a Captain by her teammates the past 2 seasons.

She is well respected because of her dedication and commitment to her personal development as well as the success of the program. She is not only one of the most skilled players that has played for us at Avon, but she is also one of the most knowledgeable players.

She is a selfless teammate. She has a tireless work ethic.  She is passionate and leads every day by example.  Abby is the kid who always shows up early getting 300-500 shots before practice and she often has to be told to go home after games. Her development as an all-around player, especially on the defensive side, has put her in the position to be one of the top players in the area.

Abby is a natural scoring guard, with point guard vision, whose back to the basket post game has made her a match up challenge for many teams. Abby’s natural ability to remain humble through her basketball career has made her such a wonderful basketball player and teammate for the Avon Basketball Program. “
