18 From Sevastos Not Enough As Geiger And Avons Lockdown Defense Defeat Titans 42-30

For all the hype the Avon Eagle offense can get at times, today proved why they can be just as deadly on defense.  The Eagles defense led by the tenacious Catie Geiger held Titan Sensational Sophomores Talyssa Moody, Courtney Simon and Laure Yee to a combined 6 points.  This is one game removed from Moody draining 5 long balls on them.  This effort led to a Eagle 42-30 victory.

Abby Liber continues to lead by example and cover every inch of the court and both sides of the ball.  Liber poured in 16 more today to lead the Eagles in scoring.  She didn’t lead all scorers however, as Athena Sevastos had herself quite the day.  Sevastos finished with 18 of her teams 30 points.

Still shorthanded, the Eagles needed everyone to step up once again, and they did.  They received 8 more from Brooke Laub, 3 from Natalie Santoro, 7 from Alyssa Peganoff, 2 from Geiger and 6 from Alyssa McLellon in yet another total team effort.

The Titans came out gunning as a Simon three ball followed by a Sevastos drive spotted them a quick 5-0 lead early. Just as it was earlier this week, the lead went back and forth in the first as the Eagles responded with back to back three balls from Abby Liber and Alyssa Peganoff to give the Eagles a 6-5 lead. It would continue to go back and forth as the quarter would end 11-8 on a Liber buzzer beating three ball.

Halfway through the second quarter, the Titans cut it to 1 point at 12-11.  The Eagles answered back with a Brooke Laub three ball followed by a McLellon to Peganoff fast break to increase the lead back up to 17-11. Their largest of the game. Following a Sevastos drive, it was McLellon answering with a three ball to increase the lead to 20-13.

The half would end 20-15 Avon as Sevastos led the Titans with 7.  Jenna Bycznski did a tremendous job in her minutes against Liber, holding Abby in check.  Liber had 7 in the half as well, but 6 of those from the three-point line, and one from the charity stripe.

After a Sevastos drive cut it to 20-17 to open the second half, the Eagles would answer with a Liber drive then a Brooke Laub three ball gave the Eagles a 25-17 lead.  From there another Titan turnover led to a Liber fast break, and the lead was pushed out to double digits at 27-17 Eagles.

Liber and Sevastos went back and forth a couple of more times, and it was 31-21 Eagles with a little over 3 minutes to go in the quarter.  The Eagles would extend the lead to 37-22 as we headed to the fourth.

Down 15 to start the fourth quarter, the Titans needed a run to get back in the game, and they got one.  In the first a Seballos three pointer was followed up by a fast break bucket by Sevastos, and only 29 seconds into the fourth quarter, it was cut to 37-27 Eagles.

A Sevastos foul shot would cut it to 37-28, but the Titans couldn’t get any closer.  A 4-0 run from Brooke Laub and Abby Liber would extend the lead back to double digits at 41-29 and pretty much put the game away.  Avon would hang on for the 42-30 win.

Good luck to both teams in the playoffs.
